Tyler Coulter’s goal at the 6:36 mark of the third period snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted Brandon to the win in what was the opening game of a weekend home and home series with the Pats.

After both teams traded goals in the first, defenceman turned left-winger Taylor Green gave Brandon its first lead of the game when he ripped a wrist shot past Regina netminder Daniel Wapple with just under four minutes to play in the second.

For the Port Coquitlam, B.C. product, the goal was his first as a Wheat King and his first since the 2012-13 season when he was a member of the Seattle Thunderbirds.

In the third, the Pats tied it at the 4:15 minute mark on a shorthanded goal by Jared McAmmond, setting the stage for Coulter’s game winner.

Ryan Pilon, in the first and Braylon Shmyr into the empty net, rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who will be out to complete a season opening weekend sweep.

Braden Christoffer rounded out the scoring for the Pats, who were outshot 30-25.

Second year netminder Jordan Papirny, who returned earlier this week from the Montreal Canadiens’ training camp, had 23 saves for the Wheat Kings while Daniel Wapple turned aside 26 in the Regina net.

The Wheat Kings have now won fourteen of their last 15 Home Openers.

Following Saturday night’s game in Regina, the Wheat Kings will return home to host Saskatoon next Friday.  Tickets to the game are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com
