KHL Begins It’s 7th Season On September 3

KHL 2014-15 regular opens on September 3 –

The 2014-15 Kontinental Hockey League season opens on September 3 with defending champions Metallurg Magnitogorsk hosting Dynamo Moscow.

This season will see the KHL with twenty-eight teams once again but three teams have withdrawn.  HC Donbass for political reasons (unrest in the Ukraine) and HC Lev Praha and Spartak Moscow for financial reasons.  They will be replaced by Jokerit from Helsinki, Finland and two teams from Russia, Lada Togliatti (Vysshaya hokkeinaya liga) and HC Sochi (expansion team).

The 2014-15 season will see the KHL go to a new scheduling format.  The league will increase it’s schedule to sixty games from the fifty-four played last season. Teams will play games primarily against teams in their own division, and secondarily against teams in their own conference, and finally against teams in the other conference.

Schedule breakdown:

1.  24 games against the other six teams in their division (two at home and two on the road against each opponent)

2.  14 games (one at home and one on the road against each opponent), against the other seven teams in the other division in their conference.

3.  14 more against teams from the other conference (comprising seven home games versus teams from one division and seven road games against teams from the other)

4.  8 random games (TBD) where four will be against teams in their own conference (two at home, two on the road) and four against opposition from the other conference (again, two at home and two on the road).  How these games are determined is not known at this time.

The top eight teams in each conference make the playoffs and these teams then play for the Gagarin Cup.
