Metallurg Magnitogorsk 2013-14 KHL Champions

Gagarin Cup Championship Ends in Seven Games —

Metallurg Magnitogorsk – 7     Lev Prague – 4

Twenty years after winning the Stanley Cup with the Rangers, Metallurg Magnitogorsk coach “Iron Mike Keenan” becomes the  first North American coach to win the Gagarin Cup which is the top prize in Russian hockey.

Mike Keenan also had a familiar face on his coaching staff in Canadian Mike Pelino.  He was also hired in 2013 to be behind the bench in Metallurg.  His last coaching position ended in December of 2012 when he was let go by Peterborough Petes midway into his third season.  Pelino was coached by Keenan at the University of Toronto then coached with him at the university and in the NHL with the Florida Panthers.

This may or may not be vindication for the controversial coach but it’s a major achievement nonetheless.  The 63 year old Keenan becomes the first and only coach to win the Stanley Cup and the Gagarin Cup.

BTW, there was a game.  Two goals in the space of a minute late in the second period ultimately decided the outcome of the 2014 Gagarin Cup.  Yaroslav Kosov and Jan Kovar led Metallurg to a 7-4 victory on the night and a 4-3 series win to give the Steelmen the KHL’s top prize for the first time. Metallurg has won the old Russian Super League three times before the KHL started play in 2008 but this was the first time they were playing for the Gagarin Cup.

Another interesting side note to the KHL Championship was that Metallurg had three Canadians on their roster.  There was former NHLer Tim Brent  along with AHLers  Chris Lee  and  Francis Pare.  These three players became the first Canadians to win a KHL Championship.
