Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: July 11

Mitch Kasprick is the “Motown Curmudgeon” aka “Motown Mitch”

Odds and Ends, Thoughts and Questions, from this past week in hockey –

Just so there’s no confusion when I’m spewing my bias, I am a fan of the Winnipeg Jets, Arizona Coyotes, Manitoba Moose, Winnipeg Ice, and all Team Canada Hockey teams.

I am NOT a fan of Gary Bettman or as I call him, Count Chocula.  I am a big believer in the 7Ps. You’ve been warned.

1. Jets:  Without getting into any in-depth analysis of the Jets’ performance at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft last week, I will say that overall I was pleased with their picks.  The truth of the matter is NOBODY really knows for sure and it will be 2-4 years before we can make a decent evaluation, so until then I won’t bore you with my predictions.  There are predictions and analyses from smarter people than I all over the place and by now I think you’ve probably seen quite a few.  One of our writers (Riley Malinowski), will be posting his thoughts soon.

2. Jets:  With Rick Bowness only signing a two-year deal it is doubtful he’ll be around to assess any of the draftees from Thursday or Friday BUT there he was on stage in Montreal shaking hands and greeting the future Winnipeg Jets.

3. NHL:  QUALIFYING OFFERS EXPLAINED

Courtesy of  CapFriendly

  • Teams must extend a qualifying offer to a restricted free agent to retain negotiation rights.
    • A qualifying offer is an official Standard Player Contract (SPC) offer which shall be 1 year in length, and which can be subject to salary arbitration should the player be eligible.
    • Clubs have until the later of June 25th or the first Monday after the Entry Draft to submit Qualifying Offers.
    • Qualifying Offers apply to Group 2 and Group 4 free agents.
    • Submitting a Qualifying Offers gives the prior club the right of first refusal to match any offer sheet submitted, or receive draft pick compensation.
    • If the player rejects the qualifying offer, they remain an RFA and their rights are retained by the team.
    • If a player does not receive a qualifying offer, the player becomes a UFA.
  • The qualifying offer is calculated from the players base salary (NHL salary minus signing bonus), and at a minimum must meet the season’s minimum salary requirements:
    • 110% of the base salary if the base salary is less than or equal to $660,000
    • 105% of the base salary if the base salary is greater than $660,000 or less than $1,000,000. However, this qualifying offer cannot exceed $1,000,000.
    • 100% of the base salary if the base salary is equal to or greater than $1,000,000.
    • CBA Reference 10.2 (a) (ii)
  • For players who are on expiring contracts that were signed after July 10, 2020:
    • The Qualifying Offer is limited to 120% of their previous contracts annual average (AAV)
    • Reference: 2020 NHL CBA extension Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
  • The qualifying offer must be a One-Way offer if the following three requirements are met (A goaltender is considered to have played a game if they are on the bench as a backup for this scenario):

1.  In the previous three seasons, the player played in:

180 NHL games (or as pro-rated in the table below)

2.  In the previous season, the player played in:

60 NHL games (or as pro-rated in the table below)

3.  The player did not clear waivers in the previous season.

4. Jets:  The Winnipeg Jets send out qualifying offers to F – Mason Appleton, F – Pierre-Luc Dubois, D – Leon Gawanke, F – David Gustafsson, F – Jansen Harkins, D – Johnathan Kovacevic, F – Jeff Malott, and F – Kristian Vesalainen.

D – Markus Phillips and F – Evgeny Svechniko have not been tendered a qualifying offer.

5. Jets:  Just in case there is some confusion, the Jets tendered a QO to Kristian Vesalainen even though they know he will be playing in Europe this season as it lets the Jets retain his NHL rights.  Conversely, the Jets didn’t offer Evgeny Svechnikov a QO so he becomes a UFA but the Jets could still resign him at a salary less than what his QO would have been.  I’m not saying they will but it is possible.

6. Jets:  I have to admit I’m a little surprised and a little disappointed that Kevin Cheveldayoff didn’t do any Wheeling (sorry) and dealing on the draft floor.  I always hope Chevy makes a deal but I’m sure he had talks and laid a foundation for future deals but nothing yet.

7. Jets:  The next big day on the calendar is this Wednesday when FREE AGENCY opens and GMs spend their owner’s money like drunken sailors on shore leave, then 3-4 years down the road they will be asking their owners if they can buy out the final 3 or 4 years of said UFA.

8. NHL:  If you’re a Leaf hater you’re going to love this graph below.

9. Jets:  Who would you like to see Chevy take a run at come Wednesday during FREE AGENT FRENZY?

Send me your pick/picks in the comment section.  Dylan Strome?  Ryan Strome?  Andrew Copp?  Vincent Trocheck?  Mason Marchment?  Paul Stastny?

10. Jets:  My weekly question for Kevin Cheveldayoff or Mark Chipman or Rick Bowness.

Since Eric Comrie is dipping his toe into the UFA waters do you guys have a backup plan (sorry again)?

11. Jets:  What did you think of Chevy’s work last week?

Are you happy with Chevy's work so far this off-season?

12. Important Dates:

July 13: The signing period for RFA and UFA free agents will begin at 11 am MB time.

August 9:  U20 WHC starts in Edmonton and runs until Aug.20.

13. Jets:  Looking back at it, did the Jets really need to trade for Nate Schmidt and Brenden Dillon?  They didn’t help the Jets get into the playoffs and they actually roster-blocked a bunch of prospects.  I realize retrospective analysis is a luxury that observers like myself can have after the horse is already out of the barn but this couldn’t have been a surprise to Kevin Cheveldayoff and/or Paul Maurice last season that they already had players in the system.  All they did was deprive players like Samberg, Heinola, ETC valuable icetime and experience at the NHL level.
14. NHL:  Is it just me or has anybody else had enough of the 10-12 people meet and greet on the stage at every draft?  There is no need to trot out that many people to make a draft selection.  Nobody knows who 80% of them are and more importantly, nobody gives a rat’s ass.

  1. Your point #14 reflects my thoughts exactly…My reaction was “Who the hell are these people anyway, and why are they dragging these non-descript assortments on stage?” My guess is that its nothing more than a vanity tour invented to give someone the bragging rights to say “I was on stage when so and so got drafted.” Nonsensical bullshit.

  2. I don’t think Schmitty worked out. I still like big pickel though. We didn’t get there but you need that body type nefront in the playoffs when we get there. I like both first rounders and my question is Berdin read? He’s fun to watch. Who would be the player on the team with the C if wheels gets dealt?

    • Mitch Kasprick says

I actually like Dillon … he’s the only dman we have with any sack … he seems to be the one going though because he has the most tradeable contract … it doesn’t seem fair does it?

    • Mitch Kasprick says

Berdin is fun but not quite ready …. The “C” would have to go to Josh wouldn’t it?

    • Mitch Kasprick says

Thanks for reading Shawn … who would be your chose for captain?

  3. Quite curmudgeonly to take issue with a bunch of people going on stage when a kid is drafted to the show. Quite curmudgeonly.

  4. Not sure how much in the piggybank the Jets have to tender a deal with any UFA but I’d like Chevy to take a look at Max Domi. He is 27, can produce offensively, may be familiar with Winnipeg from his Dad and most importantly, he has some grind and grit in his game. Something lacking immensely imo on our forwards. He isn’t a massive man,…but come on,..he’s a Domi.

    • Mitch Kasprick says

I’d be okay with Max depending on his asking price … his total salary the past 2 years was $6,000,000 per season … I’m not sure his production matches his ticket though.
