Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: July 27

Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind over the weekend —

Some random facts and a few thoughts from this past week about the Winnipeg Jets, the Manitoba Moose and the National Hockey League.

1.  Another slow week in Jetsville so I’ll concentrate on the blockbuster (tongue in cheek) signing of Alexander Semin.

2.   The Montreal Canadiens signed Alexander Semin to a 1 year contract worth $1,100,000 and many fans in “Jets Nation” wonder why the Winnipeg Jets didn’t try to sign him.

3.  Maybe the Jets did or maybe they didn’t kick the tires on Alexander Semin but with the impenetrable “cone of silence” over the offices at TNSE how would we ever know.

4.  Alexander Semin probably wouldn’t even consider the Winnipeg Jets unless he had exhausted all other 29 teams first.  It’s like those aging “boy bands” that end up starring as a free attraction on the carnival tour.

5.  Even though $1,100,000 isn’t a lot of money by today’s standards, the Montreal Canadiens can probably afford to throw away that type of money more-so than the Winnipeg Jets.

6. The Montreal Canadiens were probably better equipped to take a chance on Semin since they are more of a contender and especially in the wishy-washy Eastern Conference.

7.  Would Alexander Semin be a difference maker in Winnipeg?

8.  This slap-fest is reason enough to pass on signing Alexander Semin.

9.  When Chevy asked his pro-scouts about Alexander Semin, I wouldn’t be surprised if they said “no thanks”.

10.  Would I rather have Alexander Semin on my roster for one year versus Anthony Peluso or Chris Thorburn?  Answer: YES

11.  Would Winnipeg hockey fans rather see the Jets sign Alexander Semin instead of giving Ehlers, Petan, Armia, etc a chance to earn a roster spot.

12.  Alexander Semin has talent but is perceived to be unmotivated and lazy.

13.  In my opinion, I think the Habs were a lot more desperate for scoring than the Winnipeg Jets and the Jets aren’t exactly a scoring juggernaut!

14.  Final thought: I don’t think the Winnipeg Jets ever considered signing Alexander Semin.  I don’t think he fits into their mould although based on some of their signings I’m not sure what that mould is.

15.  Winnipeg Hockey Talk is looking for Winnipeg Jets and Manitoba Moose writers AND we would love somebody to cover the Manitoba Bisons as well.  If you or somebody you know is interested, please contact us at:

  1. Todd Leroux says

“It’s like those aging “boy bands” that end up starring as a free attraction on the carnival tour.” Do you mean like going to Manisphere (ok, the Red River Ex) and seeing Rene Simard give it all he’s got?

Still wonder about the Jets ‘so-called’ bright future.

    Many ifs, IMO.
