Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: July 6

Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind over the weekend —

Some random facts and a few thoughts from this past week about the Winnipeg Jets, the Manitoba Moose and the National Hockey League.

1.  Michael Frolik signed a 5 year $21, 500,000 contract with the Calgary Flames.  Are you sad, pissed off or indifferent?

2.  Remember hockey fans, the Free Agent period starts on July 1 but it doesn’t end there.  There is still a couple of months to watch players get signed.

3.  Serviceable depth defenceman Adam “the dangle” Pardy has re-upped for one more season with the Jets.

4.  I was hoping that the Winnipeg Jets might have been one of the teams interested in Andrej Sekera but NOT at what the Edmonton Oilers paid him.  I would rather just re-sign Buff!  Sekera will be paid  $5,500,000 for the next 6 years.  Really?

5.  Michael Frolik is now the highest paid Flames forward.  (see #1)

6.  I feel sorry for Paul Postma.  This is eerily similar to the Zach Redmond situation.  He’s stuck behind Myers, Byfuglien, and Trouba on the depth chart.

7.  In a move that seemed improbable a couple of years ago, Alexander Burmistrov has re-signed with the Winnipeg Jets (2 years with $1,550,000 AAV).

8.  Do you think that Michael Frolik never had any intention of re-signing with the Winnipeg Jets and Chevy got strung along by Allan Walsh and the Frolik camp? (see#1)

9.  Winnipeg Jets prospect, Michael Spacek, was selected by the Red Deer Rebels this past week in the annual CHL Import Draft.

10.  I must admit that I was very underwhelmed by the Matt Halischuk signing but the Manitoba Moose need players too.  I guess he would be a serviceable call-up and I think PoMo actually really likes him.

11.  Was I alone in thinking that Lee Stempniak was a no-brainer to bring back this season?

12.  I wonder if Jim Slater is garnering any UFA interest around the league?

13.  Phil Kessel is now a Pittsburgh Penguin.  He should be good for at least 40 goals per season now!  New fantasy stud?

14. Catch our interview with Keegan Kolesar on Winnipeg Hockey Talk >>> Podcast #41.  I asked Keegan to give Winnipeg Jets fans a quick scouting report on Nic Petan, Chase De Leo, Josh Morrissey, Eric Comrie, and Jansen Harkins.  Nothing is better than getting info from a player that’s played against them!

15.  The Arizona Coyotes have re-signed UFA forward Antoine Vermette and the net result for renting him out to the Chicago Blackhawks was  defenceman Klas Dahlbeck and a first-round pick that turned into Nick Merkley!  Nice work Mr. Maloney.

16.  Alexander Burmistrov will still be a RFA at the end of his newly signed contract. (see #7)

17.  Nik Ehlers has asked the Winnipeg media to address him as Nikolaj Ehlers from now on.  I wonder if Petan is next?

18.  I was a big Michael Frolik fan but like I have said numerous times since his signing with Calgary that I have lived through losing Ulf Nilsson, Anders Hedberg, Kent Nilsson, Terry Ruskowski, Rich Preston, Teemu Selanne, and the whole Winnipeg Jets 1.0 hockey team so I’m not going to cry over losing Michael Frolik.

19.  From now on when on twitter, I would like people to address me as “Mitchell Kasprick”. (see #17)

20.  Winnipeg Hockey Talk is looking for Winnipeg Jets and Manitoba Moose writers AND we would love somebody to cover the Manitoba Bisons as well.  If you or somebody you know is interested, please contact us at:

Not really concerned about Frolik leaving. If they don’t want to be in the Peg, they aren’t really what you would call an asset. He is a very dependable and productive player but not a $4.5M man. I like the makeup of the team and am looking forward to see if one or two or our prospects can make the team this year. Burmistrov is a bonus. Not a big scorer but dependable in both directions.

I wonder if Petan can adjust to being a winger? I think he can.

      • George Bain says

One of my close hockey friends doesn’t think Nic can play as he’s too small. I was frankly surprised by his assessment. I think Petan will overcome all the obstacles. I really like how he passes the puck. The way he sets guys up is beautiful to watch! In my opinion Petan and Chase De Leo are mentally tough players.

        • Mitch Kasprick says

I think De Leo is going to be in tough but we’ll see … he will definitely be going back to the WHL this season.

  2. George Bain says

You were not alone Mitchell, I too think Stempniak is a no brainer to bring back. I feel for Paul Postma. I hope he stays with the Jets. I also agree nice work Mr. Maloney. He is a very underrated General Manager in my opinion!

  3. Sad that Frolik is gone. Can’t replace that versatility. I think Petan will play for the Moose in 2015-16. I think the Jets should bring back Stempniak, if the price is right.

    • Mitch Kasprick says

I thought Petan was the closest prospect to making it last year so I think he’s really going to challenge this camp.

  4. With regards to #1 and #7, indifferent x 2. At least Mr. Burmistrov appears interested!

    8. Hell, no.

    17. As a Haligonian and Mooseheads fan, I say seriously? What is that about? I’m refraining from saying my initial thoughts on that.

    19. May I still call you Mr. Curmudgeon?

    • Mitch Kasprick says

Maybe Nik didn’t want to be mixed up with Nic !!!! AND yes you can call me Mr. Curmudgeon and if you want you can drop the Mr. and replace it with “miserable”.
