Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: Nov. 10

Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind —

Some random facts and a few thoughts from this past week about the Winnipeg Jets, the Manitoba Moose and the National Hockey League.

Editor’s note:

“Random Thoughts” will now be posted on Tuesdays.

1.  Tomorrow is Remembrance Day so please take a moment to honour the men and women that gave their lives to protect our way of life!

2.  The Winnipeg Jets finished the last week with a 1-1-1 record.

3.  The Manitoba Moose are still looking for their first home-ice win (0-3-1) and after their first ten games they are 2-6-2.  Thoughts?

4.  Paul Postma finally got into a game (Saturday night vs Philly) and I thought we played very well.

5.  #27  is a pretty confident and exciting player.  I can hardly wait to see where he is in two-three years.  I’ll be amazed if he isn’t a point per game player.  I think he’s that good.

6.  IMO, any goal that goes in off a player while he is in the goal crease should NOT be a goal.  An example would be Nic Petans first and only goal of the season.  I know the NHL is starving for goals but the goalies need to regain ownership of the “blue paint” (sorry for the blue paint reference Shawchy)

7.  Connor Hellebuyck posted a 3-0 shutout Saturday night in Charlotte vs the Checkers.

8.  This next four game road trip should tell us a lot about where the Jets are in the Central Division’s pecking order.  OR is it too soon?

9.  The Winnipeg Jets have no perfect players, I don’t think any team does but to hear the constant complaining (and that’s being polite) about some of the Winnipeg Jets gets awfully tiresome.

10.  I know Charlie Huddy works with the defence and Wade Flaherty works with the goalies but what does Pascal Vincent do?

11.  BTW, I agree with Buff that 3 on 3 is not hockey but I will take it over the shootout.

12.  Both of the Winnipeg Jets special teams are going in the wrong direction and a perfect example was their 3-0 loss to a brutal Philadelphia Flyers team.  The Jets dominated 5 on 5 and lost both special teams battles.

13.  Paul Maurice makes me scratch my head at least once a game.  He still has a lot of “old school” NHL left in him.

14.  I think it’s time for goaltenders to take back the “blue paint”!  I am at the point right now where I don’t even know why the NHL even has it.  Don’t be surprised if goaltenders don’t start chopping guys ala Billy Smith.  (see #6)

15.  The Jets  home record right now is a very ho-hum 3-3-1.  When are they going to make the MTS Centre theirs?

16.  IMO, the Winnipeg Jets defensive corp isn’t good enough to have Paul Postma sit in the press box for 14 consecutive games.  (see#4)

17.  Winnipeg Jets PP:  15th at 18.2% down from 8th at 22.9%

18.  Winnipeg Jets PK:  13th at 82.5% down 9th at 84.8%

19.  Countdown to the 2016 World Cup:  314 days (Sept. 17-Oct. 1 in Toronto).  The brain-trust was named last week and all the usual suspects will be involved.

  1. God I hope to be able to watch a game soon. I work 12 hours a week and all seem to be in exact conflict with my hockey viewing aspirations.

    6. Actually, I’d like to see more ‘in front of the net battles’, so I’d like the blue paint to be made smaller; then, the league can have a ‘zero-tolerance-ish’ approach.

    11. I hate 3 on 3. Look at the transition 15 games in: it went from end to end chances with odd-man rushes to (now) win the face-off, control the puck as long as possible, try to draw a penalty, and then maybe take a shot. Same as the SO – both gimmicks. Might as well go straight to SO after regulation.

If tied with 10 minutes left in the 3rd, go to 4 on 4. If still tied, SO and go home (as one out-of-the-box alternative). One gimmick is better than two.

    10 & 13 – Should coaching/systems be a concern/receive some attention?

On another random thought/rant, in addition to my Enstrom and Trouba concerns, I’d like to add some Adam Lowry concern: he may be fast, but he is not quick enough. He needs to train to be leaner; and hence, quicker (of course, based on limited viewing, highlights/lowlights, and basic stats.

    All of the above, IMO.

  2. Hey Mitch are you reconsidering your postma comments today?

    • Mitch Kasprick says

LOL … I actually adressed that on twitter last night and once again during today’s podcast (to be aired later today)
