Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: July 14

Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind over the weekend —

We are going to try something different at Winnipeg Hockey Talk.  Instead of being serious all the time and writing a commentary or an opinion piece we will jot down some random musings once a week.  It might be a mix of serious, playful or maybe even a little sarcastic but it should be fun.  If you have answers please let us know.

1.  Who will be the Winnipeg Jets 3rd line LW?

2.  Why do the Jets have 4 forth liners?

3.  How short is Ondrej Pavelec’s leash really going to be this season?

4.  The Jets #2 defence pairing can’t be Stuart and Trouba can it?

5.  When will Buff be back on the blue-line? (see question 4)

6.  If Winnipeg misses the playoffs again this year will Andrew Ladd be a Jet in 2015-16?

7.  Will Eric O’Dell get a legit shot this season? (see question 1)

8.  In what month does Michael Hutchinson become the Jets #1 goaltender? (see question 3)

9.  Will Josh Morrissey play more than 9 games for the Jets this year?

10.  I wonder what number I am on the Winnipeg Jets season ticket “wait list”?

Now some of these questions are serious, some are just tongue in cheek and some are me just being a _________. (you fill in the blank)

If you have any thoughts on any of these questions please let me know.  I am a curious person by nature and I need answers.

Thanks, Mitch

I thought the Jets had 6 bottom 3 not 4 . Morrissey will not play more then 9 games, too small yet. Question is if Jets don’t make playoffs will Ladd be back in 15/16 but if we don’t make playoffs and don’t get top 2 draft choices should Chevy have a job ? If we don’t make playoffs and we don’t have a legit shot at top Draft pick heads need to roll.

Those thoughts and answers are shared by many Sawchy.

#3: I suspect not short enough.
    #4: Yes, yes it can.
#5: Hopefully never. Too much of a liability.
#6: The real question should be if the Jets miss the playoffs, will Chevy still be here?
    #8: December. Mark your calendars.
    #10: 442

your answers don’t surprise me ……… #442 is pretty good ……. I think I’m 1191 … updates to be out next month.

    Hi Mitch,

I could go on forever (I’m known to do that) but I’ll limit myself to a couple of points.

Much has been made of the four 4th liners, especially since the signing of Thorburn for 3 years at 1.2M$. I believe this is misunderstood. Thorburn is an insurance policy. Winnipeg has not yet become a mecca for Free Agents. Trading has also been difficult. I have read of offers of draft picks and secondary prospects for Kane…which would be outright folly. Right now, other teams want to trade at 60¢ on the dollar. So what is left? Building from within. The hope is surely that one of the young ones will stand out in training camp or the their first nine game stint. If that happens, great. One of these so-called fourth liners can then be traded. It won’t be Thorburn. The guy is one of the Jets most consistent hitters and they need that up front. But a guy like Peluso at 600K or even Tangradi can be moved. In any event, the Jets always have a guy like that in the press box in case of short-term injuries or a specific game need. And, if the kids aren’t deemed ready at least you have a viable, albeit not ideal, body for the third line.

As for Pavs, I think the Jets are approaching it in two ways. First, they are hoping that Pavs will be better. At the exit meeting with him, they made it abundantly clear that he had things to work on over the summer, including his conditioning. That, along with Maurice improving the defensive play will make a difference. Secondly, I think the Jets will not hesitate to use Hutch if Pavs falters. They won’t name him number one so as to not put too much pressure on him. But I firmly believe he will be a factor. While this is happening they will be monitoring Hellebuyck’s work on the Rock. And it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to see glimpses of him in River City if there are injuries at some point.

well said Claude …. I look forward to more of your thoughts here.

    • Thanks, Mitch. I’m heading back to the Peg tomorrow and will be there for 2 or 3 months. We should get together for a coffee.
