Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: Mar. 21

Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind —

Some random facts and a few thoughts from this past week about the Winnipeg Jets, the Manitoba Moose, and the National Hockey League.

1.  The Winnipeg Jets ended up going 1-2-1 on the week and are 29-37-6 overall. They are doing their best for a top three pick.

2.  I can hardly wait for Nikolaj “don’t call me Nik”  Ehlers to return to the Jets lineup.

3.  Has Mathieu Perreault scored a goal since the Andrew Ladd trade?

4.  Kyle Connor had another big weekend with 5 goals and 3 assists in the Big 10 Tournament in St. Paul, Minnesota.  He now has 35 goals and 34 assists for 69 points in 36 games.  Winnipeg Jets fans are salivating over Connor just like they were salivating over Nik Ehlers last season.  Remember peeps, they’re still kids.

5.  The Jets PP is really hard to watch and every time they show Pascal Vincent’s face behind the bench I can’t help but wonder what his credentials are.

6.  Scott Kosmachuk is a lot faster than I thought.

7.  I still like Hutch and I cannot lie.

8.  Paul Postma finally potted his first goal of the season (in his 16th game).  Way to go!  Why does PoMo not like him?

9.  When is Thor getting the flu?  I know, that was mean.  Sorry Thor.

10.  Burmi is actually shooting the puck now.  Ding, ding, the light went on …. FINALLY!

11.  The NHL Draft Lottery is going to be held on April 30, 2016.  This will be the day Jets win the draft lottery while Auston Matthews states he doesn’t want to play in Winnipeg and he will explore his options in Europe.  In the meantime, Kevin Cheveldayoff works on a trade to send him to the Arizona Coyotes.

12.  Chase De Leo got a chance to play in his first NHL game on Sunday versus the Ducks which must have been a big thrill as they were his local team growing up in SoCal.

13.  I’m guessing that $600,000,000 might be a little to pricey right now for the group trying to get the Quebec Nordiques back into the NHL.  I believe TNSE paid $170,000,000 for the Atlanta Thrashers and that included a $60,000,000 relocation fee.  Seems like a bargain now, doesn’t it?

14.  It will be nice to see the NHL reduce the size of goaltender equipment, this should help to weed out a lot of pretenders while the good goalies will still be good.

15.  I’m still shocked at the lack of hitting and the amount of stick checking in today’s NHL.  Gary is getting his wish, turning the NHL in college hockey.  It’s no wonder all Chevy drafts now is NCAA players!

16.  Things that make you go hmmm?:  This flu that is running through the Jets dressing room seems awfully convenient for a team that wants to look at its prospects down the stretch.

17.  Winnipeg Jets Special teams update:

PK:  26th at 78.3 % same as last week.

PP:  29th at 14.8% down from 28th at 15.5% last week.  BRUTAL

18.  Lottery standings update:

20th mar lottery

19.  Countdown to the 2016 World Cup:  181 days (Sept. 17-Oct. 1 in Toronto)  Final rosters to be posted on June 1.

20.  Have I mentioned lately how much I HATE Toby Enstrom’s freak stick?  Man, I really hate that mutant hockey stick.

Editor’s Note:

Even though it’s behind a paywall you should go check out our own Scott Campbell’s articles in the Winnipeg Free press every Thursday evening (online) or Friday morning (in print).  Like I always stated, there’s nothing better than the thoughts and opinions from somebody that has actually been there and done that.

  1. I have been wondering about the Jet’s defence or lack there of. I don’t get to see a lot of the games but it seems to me that the Jet’s d-men have carte blanche when it comes to leading the team up the ice and that means right into the opponents zone.

What I’m asking is are we a bit more into the full court press than other teams.

By the way, it also seems that the Jets are subject to a lot more odd man rushes against them that other teams as well. Ya know, in spite of all this, we are not really a great offensive team either.

almost every team employs a different variety of activating their defencemen or full-court press …. some are more liberal and some are scoreboard driven …. it would be fair to say the teams defenceman’s skill-set definitely comes into play as well.

  2. chrishutton34 says

If Winnipeg gets the first pick, does Arizona make an offer, and what could they offer for it? Is there any deal that would make sense for the Jets to accept?

    • Mitch Kasprick says

the first player any team would ask for would be OEL

      • Who is OEL?

        • Mitch Kasprick says

Oliver Ekman-Larsson …… he would be first choice by most (especially Edm) then probably Domi or Strome

          • Oh. Now that I know who OEL is, I must say he’s a terrific player who would fit in nicely with some of the D-men with the WJs.
Would be hard to pry him out of A, but perhaps a home-grown boy like AM would convince the DDs to do that very thing.
By the way, MK. I thought you were old school. Old school is spelling out a player’s name upon first reference.
            Cheers,
            pds

FWIW, my five cents (since there are no more pennies made in Canada… )

    2. I will always agree with that..and he will always be Nik to those of us in Halifax. Just sayin’.

    4. Yep, kids. Gonna be something else in a few short years!

    5. I remember him as the head coach of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles back in the day. I recall him as being meh. I do note that both MA Fleury and Pavelec were goalies during his tenure. I think a new PP coach is a must…the Jets PP sucks donkey balls.

    7. Me too!

    11. Do you think he would pull a Lindros? Even McDavid went to Edmonton…

    14. That should make the Jets’ 16-17 interesting with their overpaid goalie… 🙁

    17. As I said above, they need a new PP coach STAT. Maybe new PK and goalie coaches too! PoMo must stay.

re: 14 ….. the upper equipment will be next year and the pads in two years AND YES the PP does suck donkey balls
