Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: Oct. 31

Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind —

Some random facts and a few thoughts from this past week about the Winnipeg Jets, the Manitoba Moose, and the National Hockey League.

1.  The Winnipeg Jets went 2-2-0 this past week and are now 4-5-0 overall.

2.  I wish play-by-play announcers would STOP calling the net a cage.  There is nothing cage-like about them.  I’m hearing this far too often and mostly from announcers south of the border.

3.  Note to Gary:  Your hybrid icing is NOT working and is a huge fail.  End this failed experiment NOW and go straight to “no touch” icing before someone gets seriously hurt.  The linesmen are still confused and get it wrong half the time anyways.

4. This week’s winner of the “most ridiculous tweet” goes to ….

5.  I’ve watched the last 3 or 4 Islanders games and Andrew Ladd is virtually invisible.  I know it’s still early and there will be an adjustment period but it looks like money poorly spent by Garth Snow.

6.  My guy got a shutout … my guy got a shutout … neener neener neener!  Ya, ya, I’ll grow up when I feel like it.

Don’t say a word about Sunday’s start.  Just don’t.

7.  It pains me to read tweets on Twitter by Jets fans wondering and criticizing the usage of Adam Lowry on the power-play.  Do they really not get it?

8.  The Winnipeg Jets transition game in the two games versus Dallas last week was at it’s best and the most consistent we’ve seen all season.

9.  On paper the line on Shawn Matthias, Adam Lowry, and Joel Armia seems to be an odd mix but for whatever reason it seems to work.  It’s hard to explain chemistry sometimes.

10.  Congratulations to Jets rookie Kyle Connor on scoring his first goal in the NHL.  It was a great finish on a great set-up by Nik Ehlers.  Winnipeg Jets fans hope it a first of many more to come.

11.  It’s real nice to see the Manitoba Moose get off to a good start this season (4-3-1) and especially with some exciting wins at the MTS Centre for the home fans.

12.  Patrik Laine is tied at the top of the NHL goal scoring leaders …. he actually might get between 30-40 goals, maybe more!

13.  The second Buffalo goal yesterday afternoon was all on Dustin Byfuglien.  The Jets cannot have a veteran player take a shift off like Buff did.  That was a horrible shift by him from start to finish.  Unacceptable!

14.  Burmi, Burmi, Burmi.  How can a player do so little with so much skill.

15.  Losing to Buffalo at home Sunday afternoon with Evander Kane and Jack Eichel out of their line-up is a disgrace.  AND I don’t want to hear about 3 games in 4 days, blah, blah, blah, because Buffalo was playing on back-to-back days.  These guys have been doing that all their lives with exception to the college boys.

16.  The Jets power-play versus Buffalo could have bailed them out but it was 0 for 6.

17.  Anytime Mathieu Perreault would like to contribute some offense on the Jets behalf would be fine by me.  He has done NOTHING in their first nine games.

18.  I counted six times in the Colorado game where Toby Enstrom had the puck and had it taken away because he was just out-muscled.  Teams are starting to dump the puck in his corner a lot more and try to punish him physically.  Maybe it’s time to pair him with Buff again.  A lot of players are taking liberties with Toby and I don’t like it.

19.  With Tyler Myers injured and missing Sunday’s game the Jets transition game was sure exposed.  Postma, Stuart and Chiarot weren’t very good.  Somewhere Jacob Trouba was smiling.  I wouldn’t smile too much Jake because Kevin Cheveldayoff isn’t going to overreact over a couple of poor games.

20.  Special Teams:

PP:  25th at 12.5%  ……… brutal

PK:  19th at 78.8% ……… decent

#15 reference to college boys: Most college conferences play Friday-Saturday series so literally half of the games they play are back-to-back. They probably have more back-to-back experience than any other development league.

good point but they definitely don’t play more back to backs than CHL teams. WHL teams play 3 games in 3 nights and 3 games in 4 nights quite a bit … Travel in the CHL is better than it used to be but schedule is much tougher than the NCAA.
