Winnipeg Jets Week in Review – Week 22

Winnipeg Jets Week In Review For Mar. 10 — Mar. 16 —

The Winnipeg Jets 22nd week of the season certainly was a busy one with 4 games starting with a road game to Denver to face the tough Colorado Avalanche and then 3 home games against the Canucks, Rangers and Stars.  After a 1-2-1 week the Jets playoff hopes are definitely in limbo.

Game 66 at Colorado

Final score:  Col 3 — Wpg  2  (OT)

Game 67 vs Vancouver

Final score:  Van 3 — Wpg 2  (SO)

Game 68 vs NY Rangers

Final score:  NYR 4 — Wpg 2

Game 69 vs Dallas

Final score:  Dal 2 — Wpg 7

3 Stars of the week:

Dustin Byfuglien  —  5 goals and 1 assist

Blake Wheeler — 6 assists

Michael Frolik — 2 goals and 2 assists

Honourable mention:

Goaltenders —  other than the Ranger game the goaltending kept the team in every game

Olli Jokinen —  1 goal and 3 assist

Toby Enstrom —  1 goal and 3 assist

Forwards:    If you take the 7 goal outburst against the stars the goal scoring has not been good enough.

Defence:   C+   The overall defensive play was better just purely based on some of the stats.

Goalie:   B-   the loss of Pavelec against the Rangers will put Montoya squarely in the line of fire until he returns.  The Ranger game was truly a disappointing game with some shots that needed to be stopped given what’s at stake.  That said, the goaltending this week on whole was good.

Special teams:   This is the same old story week in and week out. Great penalty killing and weak power play.  The talent on this team should be able to create something better than being one of the worst in the entire NHL.

Powerplay —  D  2 – 15

Penalty kill — A+   17-17

Comments:

With the convincing victory against the Dallas Stars the Jets broke a 6 game winless streak (0-3-3).  The March swoons appears to have found their way into the team psyche.  All of those good vibes before the Olympic break have clearly disappeared leaving the Jets in need some huge help on the out of town scoreboard each and every night.  Despite a huge win against a Dallas Stars team, who played the second game of back to back games, the Jets gained on the Stars only to find the Phoenix Coyotes now in the final playoff spot.
