Sean, in his third season was named the captain of the Ottawa 67’s.
He was a very good leader for a young Ottawa team that won just 16 games and finished last in the East Division.  Monahan led Ottawa with 78 points; scoring 31 goals and 47 assists in 58 games and had 24 penalty minutes.  His plus/minus was -18 on a team that allowed a lot more goals than they scored.  He was invited to Canada’s U20 camp for the 2013 World Junior Championship but was not part of the final roster.

Offence

Sean Monahan is big and powerful center with NHL size.  He is a very good stick-handler and he protects the puck well allowing him to make plays off the rush or in a cycling game.  He is a strong fore-checker, drives the net hard and gets to the tough areas to make a play.  Monahan has a very good wrist shot with a pro release.   He see’s the ice well and has good passing skills making him a very good play-maker.

Skating

Sean Monahan skates very well for a player his size.  He has good top end speed and acceleration allowing him to get by defenders taking advantage of his good puck-skills.  Sean Monahan’s biggest asset is his strength on the puck and his balance.  He competes hard and doesn’t lose very many puck battles.

Defence

Sean Monahan’s two way game is one of the best in this draft class.  He is also a very good face-off man.  He uses his size and strength effectively in all three zones of the ice.  Sean Monahan already has a high level of defensive awareness and commitment making him one of the most NHL ready forwards in the draft.

Projection

Sean Monahan has all the tools to be a first line NHL center.  He could be a point-per-game player capable of playing a solid 2-way game.  Central Scouting’s mid-term rankings had Monahan fourth among North American skaters.  CS’s final rankings have him ranked as the fifth overall in the CS’s final 2013 rankings.  I see Sean Monahan getting selected in the 5-8 range.
