Brandon Wheat Kings this week –

The Brandon Wheat Kings play the second half of their current 4-game Western Hockey League home stand this week.

After opening up with back to back victories over the weekend, the Wheat Kings will play host to Swift Current on Tuesday night before kicking off a home and home series with the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday.

Brandon enters the week with a record of 35-9-3-1, including a league leading 18-3-3 mark on home ice.

The Wheat Kings currently lead the second place Medicine Hat Tigers by six points in the Eastern Conference and have built up a 17-point cushion on Regina in the Eastern Division.

Former Saskatoon Blades’ netminder Alex Moodie turned aside 31 shots and Tim McGauley, fresh off being named the WHL’s Player of the Week, scored twice as Brandon jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead and never looked back.

Saturday, January 14th – Wheat Kings 8 Regina Pats 3
Reid Duke, Ryan Pilon and rookie Nolan Patrick scored two goals each for the Wheat Kings, who rallied from a 2-1 second period deficit by scoring seven unanswered goals including three in four minutes to grab a 4-2 advantage through forty minutes of play.

2015 Sportsman’s Dinner is held in support of the hockey club’s Scholarship Foundation.  Featured speakers include Hometown Hockey’s Ron MacLean and comedian Kelly Taylor.

FANS CHOICE AWARD RETURNS!

Shoppers Drug Mart is pleased to announce plans to give western Manitoba hockey fans the opportunity to choose the Brandon Wheat Kings’ Fans Choice Award for the 2014-15 Western Hockey League season.  Fan balloting will be available at both Shoppers Drug Mart locations in Brandon as well as online at www.wheatkings.com.  Wheat Kings’ fans can also cast a vote by visiting BDO Fan Services during all Wheat Kings’ home games at Westman Place.

The Deadline to enter is Tuesday, March 10th at midnight, with the winner to be unveiled during Fan Appreciation and Awards Night on Saturday, March 21st.

Recent winners of the hockey club’s Fans Choice Award have included the likes of Jayce Hawryluk (2013), Michael Ferland (2012), Scott Glennie (2011), Matt Calvert (2010) and Keith Aulie (2009).

This marks the ninth season that Shoppers Drug Mart has served as the Title Sponsor of the Wheat Kings’ Fans Choice Award.

Last week’s WHL Player of the Week – center Tim McGauley continues to lead the club in scoring with 29 goals and 61 points in 48 games … By scoring twice on Saturday, Patrick reached the 20-goal plateau and continues to lead all first year players in the WHL in the goals department … Russian rookie Ivan Provorov meanwhile leads all rookies in overall scoring with eleven goals and 44 points … Provorov and Ryan Pilon teamed up for a goal and an assist and a +6 plus/minus rating at last week’s Canadian Hockey League Top Prospects Game in St. Catherines, Ontario … Wheat Kings are currently averaging 4.52 goals per game … At 26.1% Brandon’s powerplay is second in the league (behind only Kelowna) … Following this week’s games, Brandon will play five straight games on the road.
