Brandon Wheat Kings this week –

The Brandon Wheat Kings have clinched one banner and now have their sights set on a new one as the Western Hockey League club enters the final month or the 2014-15 regular season schedule.

After clinching their first Eastern Division title in five years over the weekend, the Wheat Kings continue to inch closer to their first Eastern Conference title since 1996.

With nine regular season games remaining, the Wheat Kings are 46-10-4-3, good for 99 points.  They currently lead the second place Calgary Hitmen by  sixteen points in the Conference and trail the league leading Kelowna Rockets by one.  A win by the Wheat Kings or a loss by the Hitmen will clinch the Conference for Brandon.

Calgary plays in Kamloops and Prince George on Tuesday and Wednesday nights while the Wheat Kings host the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday.

Wednesday, February 25th – Wheat Kings 5 Medicine Hat Tigers 0
Jordan Papirny nailed down his fifth shutout of the season and the sixth of his WHL career as the Wheat Kings broke open a scoreless game with two goals in the final five minutes of the second period and never looked back.

Friday, February 27th – Kootenay Ice 3 Brandon 2 (OT Shootout)
The Ice outscored the Wheat Kings 2-1 in the Shootout to take the opening game of the 2-game weekend series at Westman Place.  Rihards Bukarts forced overtime by scoring with less than four minutes remaining in regulation time.

Saturday, February 28th – Brandon 6 Kootenay Ice 4
Captain Peter Quenneville scored twice, including the game winner as the Wheat Kings bounced back to with the second game of the weekend series.

PLAYOFF & SEASON TICKET DEADLINE IS WEDNESDAY!

The deadline for Brandon Wheat Kings’ Season Ticket holders to order their 2015 Playoff tickets is fast approaching and for those that do, they will receive their first two playoff game tickets FREE if they renew their 2015-16 Season Tickets at the same time.

The deadline is this Wednesday, March 4th at 7pm. Fans can either fax in their Playoff/Season Ticket forms to (204) 726-3540 or by stopping by the Wheat Kings office, located at the Keystone Centre.

The Wheat Kings, who will not have to play any post-season games in Winnipeg this spring, will open up the WHL playoffs with games one and two on Thursday and Friday, March 26th and 27th at Westman Communications Group Place.

PINK THE RINK NIGHT A SUCCESS

Over $30,000 was raised during the Wheat Kings annual “Pink the Rink Night”, in support of the Canadian Cancer Society on Saturday night.

In addition to selling limited edition pink t-shirts and raffle tickets on Alex Moodie’s game jersey, twenty-three of the club’s jerseys were sold to the highest bidder, including two during radio auctions on both 880 CKLQ and 94.7 Star FM.

BACKYARD RINK WINNER TO BE ANNOUNCED:

The deadline has come and gone for the 2015 Home Depot Brandon Wheat Kings Backyard Rink Contest.  One lucky western Manitoba fan will have a chance to host members of the WHL club in a special backyard game of shinny this month.

The winning entry will be announced later today on www.wheatkings.com

BRANDON BITS:

Center Tim McGauley extended his career high point scoring streak to nineteen games over the weekend, the longest such streak of any Wheat King since Cory Cyrenne … McGauley is currently third in league scoring with 37 goals and 89 points … Russian blueliner Ivan Provorov currently leads all WHL rookies in scoring with fourteen goals and 55 points, which is two better than Regina’s Sam Steel.  As for scoring among defencemen, he’s second only to Joe Hicketts of the Victoria Royals … Goaltender Jordan Papirny currently leads the league in two categories – wins (39) and minutes played (3,206) … The Wheat Kings Player of the Month will be announced Tuesday and the Impact presentation will be made during Wednesday’s game against the Hurricanes.
