Brandon Wheat Kings Weekly: Nov. 10

Brandon Wheat Kings this week –

The Brandon Wheat Kings enter the week riding a season high 6-game win streak and sitting atop the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference with an impressive record of 16-3-1.

After going 6-1-0 on their longest road trip of the season, which wrapped up last weekend with a 4-0 shutout in Medicine Hat, the Wheat Kings won back to back games on home ice this past weekend and won’t play again until next weekend when they host Seattle and the Tigers on consecutive nights.

With the first two games of the club’s current 4-game home stand in the books, local attention can now be focused on Tuesday’s International game at Westman Place. Team WHL will face off against Team Russia in game 2 of this year’s 6-game SUBWAY SUPER SERIES. Three members of the Wheat Kings – John Quenneville, Jayce Hawryluk and Ivan Provorov will take to the ice for the 6pm start on Remembrance Day.

LATVIAN STAR RECOGNIZED FOR QUICK START:

Brandon’s first round selection in the 2013 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, Rihards Bukarts currently leads the Wheat Kings in scoring this season with ten goals and 27 points in seventeen games. Of his ten goals, four came on the powerplay and two were game winners. For this he was named winner of the Wheat Kings IMPACT Player of the Month Award for September / October, presented by Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries.

Twenty-five of those points came in fifteen games as he was instrumental in leading Brandon to first place in the Eastern Conference.

“I think that every single hockey player, when he has confidence, he can make big things and I think that’s all about me,” Bukarts recently told CKLQ’s Bruce Luebke. “I’m getting in the zone every time and it kinds of works…I’m  feeling confident, I can make real big things when I’m feeling confident.”

NEJEZCHLEB ODD MAN OUT:

With three imports on the roster to begin last week, Brandon coach and general manager Kelly McCrimmon had no choice but to move right-winger Richard Nejezchleb to the Tri-City Americans. In exchange, Brandon receives two third round bantam draft picks – in 2015 and 2017. A fifth round draft choice of the NHL’s New York Rangers, the Czech Republic product led Brandon with 32 goals during the 2013-14 campaign.

IT’S MOVEMBER TIME AGAIN:

The Wheat Kings, in association with the Canadian Hockey League has announced the launch of the fourth season of a league-wide initiative to help change the face of men’s health in Movember. During this month, the Movember campaign challenges men to grow moustaches to spark conversation and raise vital funds and awareness to combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges.

Last season the Wheat Kings and 38 other clubs, consisting of 663 registered members raised over $157,000 and ranked 12th among all registered Canadian networks.  The CHL helped contribute to the over $33 million raised by participants across Canada and the $105 million raised worldwide.  The Movember Foundation is the leading global organization committed to changing the face of men’s health and has raised $574 million to date and funded over 800 programs in 21 countries.

In addition to the online donations, the Wheat Kings and Applebee’s will host the annual Movember Tip a Wheat King Night on Wednesday, November 26th from 4-8pm. All tips received by the Wheat Kings, who will be turning in their hockey sticks for dinner plates and glasses, will support the CHL program.
