Brandon Wheat Kings this week –
The Brandon Wheat Kings split a weekend home stand and enter the week with a record of 17-4-1 and sitting atop the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Conference.
Saturday’s win over the second place Medicine Hat Tigers ended a 4-game home stand for the Wheat Kings, who went 3-1-0 over the last two weekends of action at Westman Communications Group Place.
THIS PAST WEEKEND:
Friday, November 14th vs. Seattle
The visiting TBirds scored three third period goals to beat the Wheat Kings 6-4 before close to 4,300 fans at Westman Place. After trailing 2-1 after one period, the Wheat Kings had battled back to even the score at three through forty minutes of play
Saturday, November 15th vs. Medicine Hat
In what was billed as a battle between the top two teams in the WHL’s Eastern Conference, the Wheat Kings came from behind to beat the Tigers 3-2 in an Overtime Shootout that went eight rounds. 17-year old Braylon Shmyr ended the game by becoming the one and only shooter to score. Both goalkeepers – Jordan Papirny and Marek Langhamer – were sensational in this game. Papirny finished the night with 50 saves – 42 during the game and was a perfect 8 for 8 in the Shootout.

MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT & JERSEY AUCTION A SUCCESS:
Saturday’s Overtime Shootout win over the Tigers featured a Salute to CFB Shilo and saw the Wheat Kings in special military theme jerseys. The jerseys were auctioned off during the game, with a total of $15,901 being raised for the United Way of Brandon and District Community Fund.
While nineteen jerseys were available for bids on Saturday, two others – John Quenneville and Quintin Lisoway – had theirs auctioned off on radio earlier this month. Another one meanwhile will be won this week following a month-long raffle. BRANDON BITS: Six Wheat Kings – Rihards Bukarts, Jayce Hawryluk, Ivan Provorov, Peter Quenneville, Ryan Pilon and Reid Duke are currently averaged at least a point per game this season. Bukarts leads the club in scoring with ten goals and 28 points while Hawryluk has 12 goals and 27 points … Hawryluk is tied with Jesse Gabrielle for the team lead in goals with 12 … Hawryluk’s 5 GWG are second in the league entering this week’s play … Provorov leads all WHL rookies with eight goals and 24 points and is third in scoring among blueliners … Netminder Jordan Papirny is 6-0 with a 1.46 goals against average and a .959 save percentage in his last six starts … Friday’s loss to Seattle snapped a 6-game win streak and was Brandon’s first regulation time loss on home ice this year … Veterans John Quenneville and Macoy Erkamps are six point shy of 100 in their WHL careers.
