Zach Fucale played this past season for the Memorial Cup Champion Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL. Fucale is a very athletic, butterfly style goaltender. He has good size, is a very agile goalie and like all the new age goaltenders he does an excellent job taking away the bottom of the net.
Here Come The Goalie Buzzwords
Fucale has an excellent glove hand, very good rebound control, limits second chance opportunities by directing pucks into the corners and he is quick at smothering rebounds. Fucale has very good lateral movement, he moves well from post to post and knows how to play his angles. Overall his technique is very sound and especially for a 17 year old.
Fucale has played a lot of hockey for the Mooseheads the last two seasons and rarely takes a night off. His durability is a big plus. Like all young goalies he will need to have the mental toughness to bounce back from bad goal or even a bad game. He seems to look calm and poised at key times.
Future
He is projected to be a #1 goaltender. When, is the question as it is with most young goalies? The interesting thing about Zach Fucale is that most scouts agree he is the #1 goaltending prospect in this draft but that’s where their agreement ends. I have seen him ranked as high as #10 but mostly in the low to mid 20’s. ISS doesn’t even have him ranked in the first round. I believe he goes later in the first round between 22-26.
