Winnipeg Hockey Talk’s preliminary evaluations of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft top prospects continue today with our featured prospect Roland McKeown.

Roland McKeown had a solid rookie season in the OHL despite the -24 rating that jumps out at you.  At the 20 game mark last season he already had twelve points and has plus/minus rating of +13.  McKeown is a good positional defenceman that makes good decisions.  He moves the puck well and has a good shot.  Early on in the 2013-14 season he was getting a little more comfortable with his offensive game.  His solid play continued on throughout the remainder of the 2013-14 season and after his second full year in the OHL his numbers blossomed to 43 points and an impressive +38.

Achievements:

1.  Drafted  2nd overall in the 2012 in the OHL Priority Selection Draft by the Kingston Frontenacs.

2. Represented Canada at the 20121-13 U18 WJC (Gold).

3.  Represented Canada at the 2013 U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament (Gold).

4.  2012-13 OHL “All Rookie Team”

Prospect Analysis:

Roland McKeown is considered one of the top defensive prospects after Aaron Ekblad in the 2014 NHL Draft.  In my opinion it is between McKeown and Hadyn Fluery for the 2nd or 3rd defencemen drafted in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.  It’s a wide open draft and Roland McKeown should be a 1st Round selection, probably between 15-25.
