Prince Albert Raiders defenceman Josh Morrissey was selected 13 overall by the Winnipeg Jets at the 2013 National Hockey League Entry Draft in New Jersey this afternoon.

The 6’, 185-pound blueliner recorded 15 goals and 32 assists for 47 points and a plus-14 rating last season for the Raiders, tops among team defencemen in all three categories. The Canadian Hockey League Scholastic Player of the Year also recorded 5 power play goals and 4 game winning goals in the 2012-2013 campaign.

Following the conclusion of the Raiders playoffs, Morrissey won gold with Team Canada at the 2013 World Under-18 Championships in Sochi, Russia, where he led the tournament in plus/minus and finished second in defenseman scoring. His efforts were recognized by tournament brass, as he was named one of Canada’s top three players in the tournament.

Morrissey follows in the footsteps of teammates Mike Winther, who was drafted in the second round last year as well as Mark McNeill and Harrison Ruopp, who were selected in the first and third rounds in 2011, respectively.

The Calgary, Alberta native became the 15th player in Raider history to be drafted in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft, and is the 82nd player to be drafted since the team joined the WHL in 1983.
