Brandon Wheat Kings News For The Week Of Jan. 20 – Jan. 26 –
The Brandon Wheat Kings begin the week sitting atop the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Division with a record of 25-17-4-0 thanks to back to back victories this past weekend against Swift Current and Saskatoon.
Brandon scored four straight goals, including three in the third period on Friday to score a come from behind 6-5 victory over the visiting Broncos and then travelled to Saskatoon on Saturday where the Wheat Kings edged the Blades 4-3. Brandon got goals from six different players on Friday while Rihards Bukarts scored twice, including the game winner with 7:34 to play in the third period on Saturday.
Swift Current blanked Prince Albert 7-0 on Sunday to move back into a share of the division lead with the Wheat Kings. However, Brandon enters the week having played two fewer games.
Brandon travels to Swift Current on Wednesday night, before returning home to host the Prince George Cougars on Saturday night.
Saturday is MATT CALVERT BOBBLEHEAD NIGHT, presented by MTS Connect and its three Brandon retailers. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a bobblehead that features the likeness of former Wheat Kings’ co-captain Matt Calvert of the National Hockey League’s Columbus Blue Jackets

Following Saturday’s game, the Wheat Kings will hit the road for a four game in 5-night road trip that will begin Tuesday night in Edmonton against the Oil Kings. The trip, which will conclude Saturday, February 1st in Saskatoon will include stops in Calgary and Red Deer.

The Wheat Kings have been forced to practice outside Westman Place for most of the week, due to the annual Ag Days that begins Tuesday morning at the Keystone Centre.
FANS CHOICE AWARD RETURNS:
Shoppers Drug Mart is pleased to announce plans to give western Manitoba hockey fans the opportunity to choose the Brandon Wheat Kings’ Fans Choice Award for the 2013-14 Western Hockey League season.
Beginning this week, fan balloting will be available at both Shoppers Drug Mart locations in Brandon as well as online at www.wheatkings.com. Wheat Kings’ fans can also cast a vote by visiting BDO Fan Services during all Wheat Kings’ home games at Westman Place, beginning this Saturday when Brandon plays host to the Prince George Cougars.
Recent winners of the hockey club’s Fans Choice Award have included the likes of Jayce Hawryluk (2013), Michael Ferland (2012), Scott Glennie (2011), Matt Calvert (2010) and Keith Aulie (2009).

Saturday’s win was the Wheat Kings’ 25th of the season, one more than the team had all of last year … Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon is eight wins shy of tying Bob Lowes for the most wins by a coach in franchise history … Three members of the Wheat Kings – John Quenneville, Jayce Hawryluk and Richard Nejezchleb – were included in the NHL’s Central Scouting midterm rankings released last week. In the list of North American skaters, Quenneville was 34th, Hawryluk 42nd and Nejezchleb, who attended Pittsburgh’s NHL camp last September, was ranked 114th overall … Over 500 tickets have been sold for this year’s CKLQ Wheat Kings Sportsman’s Dinner, to be held on Thursday, Feb. 6th in the Keystone Centre’s UCT Pavillion.
