Brandon Wheat Kings News For The Week Of  Jan. 27 – Feb. 2 –

Fresh off Saturday’s 6-3 victory over the visiting Prince George Cougars, the Brandon Wheat Kings left Sunday for what will be a challenging four game in five night road trip that will see them make stops in Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary and Saskatoon.

Entering Tuesday afternoon’s game against the defending Eastern Conference Champion Oil Kings in Edmonton, Brandon is sitting with a record of 26-17-5, good  for 57 points and second place in the Western Hockey League’s Eastern Division.

The Brandon Wheat Kings and Oil Kings will play in front of a large number of school aged kids on Tuesday as Edmonton hosts its annual “Hookey for Hockey Day”, which has become a popular program within that city’s School Division.

Brandon is currently one point back of first place Swift Current but only two up on third place Regina in the Division.

As for the Conference, the Wheat Kings are fifth behind Edmonton, the Broncos, Calgary and Medicine Hat.  Meanwhile they’re just three up on both Red Deer and Kootenay, who currently share seventh place.

The Brandon Wheat Kings next home game is a week from Wednesday when they play host to the Tigers at 7pm.  In fact, Brandon plays eight home games over a three week span during what will be an extremely busy month of February for the Wheat Kings.  They will play a total of twelve games over the course of 22 days.

2014 CKLQ WHEAT KINGS SPORTSMAN”S DINNER:

The final countdown has begun on the Wheat Kings’ annual Sportsman’s Dinner, scheduled for Thursday, February 6th in the Keystone Centre’s UCT Pavillion.  Headlining the event, which is held to raise money for the hockey club’s Education Fund is 6-time Stanley Cup Champion Bryan Trottier. Joining him will be Gord Stellick of Sportsnet and comedian Andrew Grose of Edmonton.

While the event is close to becoming another “sell out” there are a limited number of tickets remaining. To order call the Wheat Kings office at 726-3535.

Entering the week, the Wheat Kings are 6-2-2 in their last ten games … Brandon is 16-6-2-0 on home ice and 10-11-3-0 on the road … Fourteen of Brandon’s 18 skaters registered at least a point in Saturday’s win over the Cougars … Captain Ryan Pulock and second year center Tim McGauley, who shared the team scoring title in 2012-13, are currently riding 5-game point scoring streaks while Edmonton product Peter Quenneville has points in four straight … Meanwhile Jayce Hawryluk has gone twelve games without finding the back of the net … Congratulations to local product Daren Millard of Sportsnet, who was recently selected to the MSSA Media Row of Honour during its annual Awards Ceremony in Winnipeg … Saturday’s game against the Cougars featured the Matt Calvert Bobblehead Night, with the first 2,000 fans in attendance receiving the limited edition bobblehead that featured the Columbus Blue Jackets star in his 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup theme jersey.
