Random Thoughts for Sept.1, 2025

Mitch Kasprick is now the “Westdale Curmudgeon.”

Odds and Ends, Thoughts, and Questions from this past week in Hockey –

Just so there’s no confusion when I’m spewing my bias, I am a fan of the Winnipeg Jets, Manitoba Moose, and all Team Canada Hockey teams.

I am NOT a fan of Gary Bettman, or as I call him, Count Chocula.  I am a big believer in the 7Ps, or is it the 8Ps?  You’ve been warned.

Poll question:  I’m very curious to see which of the youngsters make a hard push for a roster spot.  Please select a maximum of 3 players.

Will any of the Jets youngsters make a push for a roster spot.

1. Jets: Winnipeg Jets Goaltender Eric Comrie has been granted a sponsor’s exemption to The Manitoba Open and will compete as an amateur in the tournament at Breezy Bend Country Club.

Here is the Winnipeg Jets all-time Manitoba Open leaderboard.

Eric Comrie is a member at Shady Canyon Golf Club in Irvine, CA. and is a 4 handicap, BUT a 4 handicap shouldn’t be shooting 96-88 at Breezy Bend in my opinion.  I don’t know about you, but I’m not interested in watching hockey players slash it around, shooting in the 90s ffs.  I bet their professional playing partners must have loved watching some putz slash it around for 4 !/2 hours. Please stop this madness LOL

2. Jets:  Pet peeve:  I hate when RFAs say they are so glad to be back, like they were going anywhere.

3. Jets: I have softened my stance on the Gustav Nyquist signing as he is just a placeholder until one of the youngins is ready for primetime.

4. Jets:  I have a funny feeling that Jacob Julien, who is definitely a late bloomer, might have a bigger impact with the Jets’ organisation than some of the Jets’ more highly touted prospects.  I’m looking forward to seeing him in camp.

5. Jets:  Last article, I mentioned that Adam Lowry had successful hip surgery in late May, so a 5-6 month rehab would see him possibly returning in November.  Imagine the surprise when I saw this.

6. NHL:  The NHL has published a list of their ” Top 20 centers,” and the Winnipeg Jets’ Mark Scheifele came in at the #9 position.  The only problem I had with the list was Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl at #3, who plays wing with Connor McDavid half of the time.

Please send me your thoughts on the list in the comment section.

7.  Jets:  I would say both have a good chance to make the Olympic roster.

8. Jets:  The accolades continue to roll in for the Jets organisation as the NHL has awarded the best Social Media to @NHLJets

9. WHT: In some WHT news, my granddaughter Harley “BUP” Friesen will be the moderator/co-host on the Winnipeg Hockey Talk YouTube channel.  We hope to be up and running before the regular season starts.  Stay tuned.

 10. Jets:  From the “Put that in your pipe and smoke it” file.

Ex-Jets Nate Schmidt and Dmitri Kulikov were both Stanley Cup winners this season.  Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

11. NHL:  The 2028 World Cup of Hockey will have a field of eight teams, and Frank Seravalli breaks down who’s in and who’s out of the tourney.

12. Jets:  Two out of three have a shot at making Team US.

 13. Jets: Dates of note:

Sept. 15 – My next Random Thoughts.

Oct. 9 – Season opener/home opener vs Dallas

Apr. 16 – Olympic break

14. Jets:  One of the best home jerseys in the league, the “Heritage” blues.

15. Things that make me go hmmm:  In a season when the NHL shuts down for two weeks, why wouldn’t they start the regular season earlier than Oct.7?
