Random Thoughts From Motown Mitch: May 27

Mitch Kasprick is the “Motown Curmudgeon” aka “Motown Mitch”

Odds and Ends, Thoughts and Questions, from this past week in sports –

Just so there’s no confusion when I’m spewing my bias, I am a fan of the Winnipeg Jets, Arizona Coyotes, Manitoba Moose, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Winnipeg Goldeyes, Toronto Raptors, all curlers from Manitoba, and all Canadian athletes competing on the international stage.

I am NOT a fan of Gary Bettman or as I call him, Count Chocula.  I am a big believer in the 7Ps.  You’ve been warned.

1.  Raptors:  As a longtime Toronto Raptors fan I can’t believe the Raps finally won the Eastern Conference and are going to the NBA Championships.  This is HUGE news for anybody that regularly follows this team.  It’s been a long time coming.  Golden State is going to be a tough opponent.  Maybe having home court advantage for the best of seven could be the difference?  We The North.

2.  WHCA very enjoyable WHC concluded on Sunday with Finland upsetting Canada in the Gold Medal game by a score of 3-1.  It came down to Canada getting out-goalied in a game that was very winnable.  I’m okay with a Silver Medal.  Also, congratulations to Winnipeger Mark Stone on being named the tournament MVP.

3.  LPGA:  My favourite Canadian golfer, Brooke Henderson, had a good week at the Pure Silk Championship finishing T2 which should bode well for her going into next weeks Women’s U.S. Open.  GOOD LUCK Brooke!

4.  CHLAs a WHL guy I have no explanation as to why the WHL has only won one Memorial Cup in the past ten years.  I find this very disturbing.  Rouyn-Noranda won the Memorial Cup by defeating the host team, Halifax 4-2.

5.  NHL:  I wonder if more Canadians will be watching the NHL Finals or the NBA Finals?

6.  Raptors:  I don’t want to even think about this now but I am really going to miss Kawhi Leonard next year.

7.  NFLI know I’m in the minority but I could care a rats ass about a pre-season game between Oakland and Green Bay and especially at NFL regular season prices.  To be fair I wonder how I would feel if it was a Vikings pre-season game?

8.  Blue Jays:  The Toronto Blue Jays are tough to watch on some nights this season but getting to see the prospects integrate their way into the roster is exciting.  The latest prospect to make his imprint on the team was Cavan Biggio.  Biggio had a three-hit game on Sunday including his first major league dinger.  The Blue Jays seem to have an abundance of tier one position player prospects but I don’t see much down the pipeline in the pitching department.

9.  Jets:  The Winnipeg Jets have agreed to terms with goaltender Laurent Brossoit on a one-year contract with an AAV value of $1,225,000.  The term made me wonder if the team isn’t quite sure what they have in him OR if he is just keeping the backup seat warm for Mikhail Berdin?  Outside of the recent Brossoit signing it’s been very quiet around Jetsville but as it gets closer to the draft I think the dominoes will start falling and I think there will be tons of signings and trades to talk about.  We’re only a month away!

10.  Jets:  I don’t find any solace in the fact that the Winnipeg Jets ended up losing to the eventual Western Conference Champions.  Actually, it really pisses me off.

Does it make you feel any better that the Jets lost to the team that won the Western Conference?
