Random Thoughts on the Winnipeg Jets for Nov. 3 2025

Mitch Kasprick is now the “Westdale Curmudgeon.”

Odds and Ends, Thoughts, and Questions from this past week in Hockey –

Just so there’s no confusion when I’m spewing my bias, I am a fan of the Winnipeg Jets, Manitoba Moose, and all Team Canada Hockey teams.

I am NOT a fan of Gary Bettman, or as I call him, Count Chocula.  I am a big believer in the 7Ps, or is it the 8Ps?  You’ve been warned.

For a more in-depth look at these Random Thoughts, host Harley Friesen and Winnipeg Hockey Talk writer Mitch Kasprick discuss his Random Thoughts on the Winnipeg Jets, Manitoba Moose, and the National Hockey League on the new WHT YouTube channel  https://www.youtube.com/@WpgHockTalk

1. Jets:  At the 12-game mark of the season, the Winnipeg Jets have a tidy 9-3-0 record and sit in second place in the Central Division.  The team really hasn’t been hitting on all cylinders yet, so 18 out of a possible 24 points is more than acceptable considering the injuries and lots of new faces.

2. Jets: The Jets could have some of their walking wounded back soon, and this should balance out the lines and get certain players in more familiar or proper roles.  Getting Adam Lowry and Cole Perfetti back in the top-nine forwards should certainly strengthen the team’s secondary scoring.

3. Jets:  Jonathon Toews is an impressive 63.3% at the faceoff dot.

4. Jets:  From the Put that in your pipe and smoke it” file.

I realize it’s only 12 games into the season, but Mark Scheifele is leading the NHL in scoring, so to all the haters out there, PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT, and to boot, the National Hockey League announced that Scheif has been named the NHL’s Second Star of the Month for October.

5. Jets:  Congrats to Brad Lambert on his FIRST NHL goal on Saturday afternoon versus the Pittsburgh Penguins.

6. Jets:  The last week was a very eventful week for Jets forward Gabe Vilardi.  After feeling a bit snakebit after his first seven games, Gabe rattled off his first five goals of the season in his next five games, along with four helpers.  Nine points in those five games gives him thirteen points in twelve games on the season, and all feels right again

7. Jets:  Logan Stanley seems to have finally settled into a top-six dman role on the Jets, and I think he now understands what his role is.  He still struggles at times to make the simple plays, but overall, his play has been pretty solid, and he has better offensive instincts than most fans would think.

8. Jets:  You know who is starting to grow on me?  Cole Koepke!  Yes, Cole Koepke.  He isn’t going to burn up the score sheet as a fourth liner, but his speed complements Morgan Barron’s speed, and along with veteran Tanner Pearson make a very effective 4th line.

9. Jets:  I don’t think I talk about Connor Hellebuyck enough, and I think I’m going to make more of an effort to pump his tires on a more regular basis.  We’ve been blessed with his brilliance for so long that he gets taken for granted at times.  We’re lucky to have him.

10. Jets:  I am such a fanboy at times, but I just love the (click👉) jacket ceremonythe team has in the dressing room after every win.

11. Jets:  Question for Scott Arniel:  Where would you be without the 50 combined points from the top line of Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, and Gabe Vilardi?  They have carried this team’s scoring so far this season and have been outstanding, and dare I say, to this point have been one of, if not the best lines in the entire NHL.

12. Jets:  Special Teams: Rule of thumb. Have the two red numbers (PK and PP) total at least 100% when added (as your minimum).

  • PP: 8th at 25.60%
  • PK: 5th at 89.40%
  • FO: 6th at 53.10%

13. Jets:  Goaltending:

  • Connor Hellebuyck:  6-3-0 … 2.34 GAA … .921SV%
  • Eric Comrie:  3-0-0 … 2.33 GAA … .929 SV%

14. Jets:  The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly this past week.

    • Good:  Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, and Gabe Vilardi are a combined +24 at even strength, which shows you can teach an old dog new tricks.
    • Bad:  Poor Gus Nyquist is still goalless after his first 11 games as a Winnipeg Jet.  If he keeps squeezing his stick any tighter, he’ll be able to start his own sawdust company.
    • Ugly:  NHL officiating leaves me scratching my head night after night.

15. Things that make me go hmmm:

Watching Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor all these years makes me wonder how two players so poor defensively can morph into two pretty responsible 200-foot players?

16. Jets Injury Update:  Winnipeg Jets coach Scott Arniel announces the bad news that Morgan Barron is out week-to-week.
