Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: Dec. 8

Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind over the weekend —

Here are a few thoughts from this past week about the NHL and our Winnipeg Jets.

1.  The Winnipeg Jets played 3 games this week, all at the MTS Centre, going 2-0-1.  Thoughts?

2.  A HUGE congratulations to Bryan Little on scoring the Winnipeg Jets 2.0 FIRST ever hat-trick and his second career hatty!

3.  The Winnipeg Jets have chalked up 5 of 6 points in back to back weeks!

4.  The Jets improved their home record to 6-5-2 after going 2-0-1 at the MTS Centre this past week.  Not great but getting better and they are starting to dictate the pace at home which is encouraging.

5.  With injuries on the back-end to Enstrom, Bogosian and Clitsome, the coaching staff has decided to give “Big Buff” another shot on the blue-line.  Thoughts?

6.  Right now, the Winnipeg Jets are getting the best goaltending they have seen since their arrival in Winnipeg.

7.  Congrats to Ben Chariot on recording his 1st NHL point and recording an assist on Andrew Ladd’s goal Friday night versus Colorado.

8.  December 5/2014:  It took 239 games but it finally happened!  (see #2)

9.  Winnipeg Jets goaltender Michael Hutchinson is leading the NHL in GAA at 1.62 and SV% at .943.  Not bad EH!

10.  The top 5 NHL teams in GAA are all from the Western Conference.

11.  Evander Kane took a “checking from behind” major penalty and “game misconduct” Sunday versus Anaheim and he will probably be getting a call from the NHL disciplinary office.

12.  Dustin Byfuglien’s “give and go” with Mathieu Perreault on the PP was one of the Jets prettier goals this season.

13.  Jacob Trouba had a nice week notching 2 goals and 3 helpers.

14.  The Winnipeg Jets and their goaltending tandem of Ondrej Pavelec and Michael Hutchinson are 4th in NHL in GAA at 2.21.  (see #10)

15.  Dustin Byfuglien has looked good in his two game stint on defence but as the ice-time increased so did the mistakes.  28:08 TOI versus Anaheim on Sunday is too much for Buff.

  1. I like what I am seeing but we are still a bubble team with a long way to go. We are playing hard 60 min hockey with structure for the most part. Our goaltending has actually won us some games this year but we are still just a 500 team. Kane is playing his way to a trade and Schiefele has been disappointing to me. Too soft imo. Overall big improvement but depth could become a problem. So will fatigue if we don’t get a 4th line we can play regularly.

Scheifele has the best hands on this team and makes passes that other cannot but gets no PP time …. at times he gets too easily moved off the puck but he is getting better. I wonder what T.J. Galiardi has to do to get into the line-up?

  2. I was at the game where Little got his hat-trick. Special night. The loudest I’ve heard MTS Centre in a while. Like Buff on the blue line. Time for Scheifele to raise his game. Interesting to note that Kane got 2 games. First game back is against Anaheim. Coincidence?

I liked Buff on D but not at 28 minutes ….. Scheifele is a slow starter just like his junior coach …. #BlameDucky

Really like how Maurice has juggled the lines especially with Kane out for two games. Great effort from all the players against Dallas and Hutch comes up with the timely saves. The more I watch the more I say this is a tough team to play against. Hopefully they can keep it going. Chariot looks like a veteran defenseman out there.

I like Chiarot in the pre-season and last year in the AHL playoffs ….. he plays a smart, physical game and is a decent puck mover.

  4. I am okay with Dustin Byfuglien filling in on the back end.I think careful matchups could go a long way. A guy who is really falling into a well suited role is Andrew Ladd. I thought he contributed in a multitude of ways of late.

Watched the Jets and Anaheim last night and Anaheim really impressed me. For a team that arrived in Winnipeg early morning after playing Edmonton they should have been a tired hockey club. Man they battled and matched the Jets physically. I agree with Maurice and some of the players who stated that this is the type of team they are striving to be. With all the injuries Anaheim has had and to be winning like they are is impressive. The Jets gave them trouble but just can put the puck in the net at the right time. Too many penalties as well. We will see how they do against Buffalo.
