Winnipeg Hockey Talk’s evaluations of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft top prospects continue today with our featured prospect Brycen Martin.

1.  Represented Canada (Pacific) at the World U17.

2.  Drafted in the 1st round 2nd overall by the Swift Current Broncos in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft.

3.  Played for Team Orr at the 2014 BMO CHL / NHL Top Prospects Game.

Offensive Buzzwords

Brycen Martin has developed into a very solid 2-way defenceman.  The combination of being a good skater with a decent shot that can also pass the puck very well has seen him elevate the offensive part of his game in 2013-14.  Like all good offensive defensemen he has good hockey sense and sees the ice well.

He is a good skater with excellent mobility.

Defensive Buzzwords

Brycen Martin is very smart defensively.  He is very sound positionally and uses his size effectively in front of the net and along the boards.  He also makes a good first pass on the breakout.  He played much better in his own end than his -16 rating.

Prospect Analysis

Brycen Martin already has NHL size and with his offensive game on the upswing could be a real sleeper going into this years draft.  He is developing into a very good two way defenceman that all NHL teams covet.  He has the look of a top four blueliner that will be competent in both ends of the rink.  He has all the tools, size, skating, skill and grit.  I have him rated as a late first round/early second round pick but he could surprise and go much higher.  Top blueliners are at a premium this draft.
