Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: Apr.27

Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind over the weekend —

Some random facts and a few thoughts from this past week about the Winnipeg Jets and the National Hockey League.

1.  The Winnipeg Jets returned home for games 3 and 4 but lost both.   Swept 4-0 by the Ducks.

2.  The WHITEOUT was pretty spectacular and belongs to the people of Winnipeg NOT to Winnipeg Jets 1.0, the Arizona Coyotes or anybody else.

3.  Almost every Winnipeg Jets fan knew, the team were nursing some injuries and many players were playing hurt but I was surprised at the extent of the injuries.

4.  After being pretty calm and relaxed about the Jets being swept, I’ve had time to think about it and I’m not happy about it.

5.  I think the Jets deserved better that a 4-0 sweep but the history books won’t give a crap.  4-0 it is!

6.  In a one goal hockey game, referee Chris Lee can’t blow that call.  I feel a little bit sad (tiny bit) for the Senators.

7.  I love Paul Maurice but his loyalty to certain players and stubbornness to make roster moves actually pisses me off.  Does PoMo ever make decisions that aren’t based on injury?  (see #3)

8.  How many of you would have started Michael Hutchinson in game 4 just to see if it would spark the team?

9.  After watching the other seven playoff series, it really pisses me off that Jets got swept.  Every team had injuries, adversity, suspect goaltending, whatever and made adjustments.  The Winnipeg Jets made no line-up changes (except for Chiarot for Pardy) and as it turns out, kept trotting out a powerplay with a bunch of injured players.  (see #4)

10.  The Toby Enstrom supporters were out in full force after the Jets were eliminated and I’m totally fine with that BUT please, please stop trying to convince me or change my mind about what I like and don’t like.  I’m not an Enstrom fan and I’m just stating my opinion, not trying to make you agree with me.

11.  FYI:  The Atlanta Thrasher/Winnipeg Jets franchise are still looking for their first playoff win.  Now 0-8.

12.  I would rather see healthy “lesser players” play than injured “better players” play.  I’ve never bought into that saying that “I’d take an injured Ladd at 75% over a health O’Dell as an example.  AND that was just two names I through out as an example.   (see #9)

13.  It’s really sad that I’m now reduced to cheering against the Islanders and the Blues so the Jets get a better draft pick from the Sabres in the Evander Kane deal.

14.  Whatever happened to the days where a goaltender actually Stood Up on routine shots.  Why are they dropping to their knees on every shot?

15.  Although it was a hard-hitting series, the Jets showed the Ducks way, way too much respect.  They should have gotten in their grill and under their skin, not vice-versa.

16.  I wonder how secure St. Louis Blues coach, Ken Hitchcock feels about his job after three straight first round exits.

17.  Has Jim Slater played his last game as a Winnipeg Jets player?

18.  PP update:  The Jets PP in the series was 2-13 … (2 goals) … 15.4%

19.  PK update:  The Jets PK in the series was 8-11 … (3 goals) … 72.7%

20.  Now Jets fans, we can turn our attention to the 2015 NHL Entry Draft (Jets with two 1st rounders) and Free Agency.

    4. I was never calm or relaxed about it, I am happy for their season and progress made but I really thought they could make some noise in the playoffs. Not to mention I am a fierce Jets supporter living just outside of Calgary.
    7. I find his allegiance to certain players baffling, even when it comes to his line combinations.
    9. I am also a Raptors fan, both of my pro winter sports teams got swept. Go Wheaties Go however.
    14. Nothing more frustrating than when a goalie gets beat over his shoulder. Just stand there and it will hit you at least.
    15. I thought all season that the refs called the Jets really close, hard to get under anyone’s skin.
    17. Speaking of Maurice’s baffling allegiance…..even though I think he played some of his best hockey during the playoff drive, looking at who is coming up for the Jets I don’t see where Slater will fit going forward.

Hey Chris, I’m pulling for Brandon too but wouldn’t be upset in Portland or Kelowna won …. my WinterHawks allegiance still runs pretty deep … go say hi to my buddy Ben who is the Golf Pro in Taber when you are near … LOL .. tell him I sent you … maybe he’ll comp you a round, he’s a HUGE Jets fan too.

I have one comment. Hockey is a business. There is little room for loyalty. To some degree that must change in the Jets org. Signings like Thorbs and possibly Slater only retard the development process. I like both but Buff and Ladd are going to start to regress soon. Jets cannot afford to sign these guys to big $$ long term contracts because of past performance. (loyalty). How will they be 4/5 yrs from now and beyond? See Bruins Kings Chicago as examples of what can happen. Myrtle had good article on this today. If we are not a cap team then asset management is critical. Long term only for the Troubas of the team not the soon to be aging vets.

  4. 7. Maurice should have done something. I would have been tempted to play either Copp or Ehlers. And before anyone else says they’re too young, please see Sam Bennett in Calgary.
    17. I think Slater is done. He’s just a faceoff guy who looked totally out of his depth against Anaheim.

when you’re down 3-0 anything goes IMO … you need a spark and ESPECIALLY now knowing the injury situation.
