Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: Oct. 16

Mitch Kasprick is now the “Westdale Curmudgeon”

Odds and Ends, Thoughts, and Questions from this past week in Hockey –

Just so there’s no confusion when I’m spewing my bias, I am a fan of the Winnipeg Jets, Arizona Coyotes, Manitoba Moose, Winnipeg Ice, and all Team Canada Hockey teams.

I am NOT a fan of Gary Bettman or as I call him, Count Chocula.  I am a big believer in the 7Ps or is it the 8Ps?  You’ve been warned.

1. Jets:  The Winnipeg Jets went 1-1-0 in their first two games of the season and look like a different team in more ways than one.  The Jets play LA (Tue) and Vegas (Thur) at home and play the late game on HNIC Saturday night in Edmonton.

2. Jets:  I wonder how much vitriol will be spewed at Pierre-Luc Dubois on his first visit back to Winnipeg on Tuesday night?

3. Jets:  Mark Scheifele is off to a positive start in the faceoff circle after his first two games going 32-19 for a winning percentage of  62.8.

4. Jets:  Kyle Connor and Neal Pionk are two players I’m looking at to have bounce-back seasons.  KC’s points were okay but his goal-scoring was way down, especially at even strength.  Pionk has been “off” for about two seasons but looked much better down the home stretch and in the playoffs last season.

5. Jets:  I’ve noticed the Jets putting more pucks to the net and playing a little more straight-line hockey.  It looks like Rick Bowness’s words are slowly sinking in … so far.

6. Jets: It is human nature to play the “blame game”, we all do it but is it fair

Jets:  Poll question

Was it fair some fans were blaming Nate Schmidt for the Jets opening night loss?

7.  Jets:  Special Teams: Rule of thumb. Have the two red numbers (PK and PP) total at least 100% when added (as your minimum).

  • PP: 13th at 20.00%
  • PK: 18th at 80.00%
  • FO: 21st at 49.00%

8. Jets:  Goaltending:

  • Connor Hellebuyck:  1-1-0 … 4.07 GAA … .852 SV%
  • Laurent Brossoit:  0-0-0 … 0.00 GAA … .000 SV%

9. Jets:  The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly this past week.

    • Good:  The team depth looks better than it ever has.  The Jets don’t actually have plugs on their 4th line.
    • Bad:  Lack of finish versus Calgary.
    • Ugly:  No ugly yet unless we count the officiating versus Florida on Saturday.

10.  Random:  Enough with the rugby scrums in the CFL and NFL.  Blow the f’n whistle once forward progress is stopped.  Quicker whistles, please.
