Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: Sept. 29

Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind over the weekend —

Some of the things that rattled through my head about the NHL and our Winnipeg Jets this past week.  I really had a bad week for having any empathy, sympathy or use for the visor wearing fighter, staged fights and the dreaded “energy line”.

1.  NHL linesmen have been instructed to break up fights immediately when players remove their helmets.  I don’t like it but I get it.  The NHL is covering their butts in case somebody bangs their head on the ice.  They would rather have players bust up their hands punching helmets and visors.

2.  I was looking in the NHL Rule book and in the CBA and I couldn’t find the clause that states that 4th lines need to be “grinders” or “fighters” or “energy players”.

3.  Nic Petan deserves a long hard look at making the Jets roster.  Agree or disagree?

4.  Looks like the early favorite for 2014-15 Twitter “whipping boy” is Zach Bogosian.

5.  Until the NHL officially outlaws fighting, I can’t blame players for wanting to take off their lids to scrap especially if they wear a visor and especially the guys that are considered enforcers.  Believe it or not, these guys actually have a code. (exception Zac Renaldo)

6.  I thought it was actually honorable that Anthony Peluso and Curt Gogol took their helmets off before wanting to fight and especially since Peluso wears a visor.

7.  I really hate the term “energy line”.  What does that mean?  They drink more Red Bull (see #2).

8.  I really dislike “fighters” or “enforcers” wearing visors (see #1, #5, #6).

9.  My definition of “energy line” … can’t score, won’t score, have no hope of scoring!

10.  I guess getting banged in the head by a fist is a choice and banging your head on the ice isn’t (see #1).

Now some of these questions are serious, some are just tongue in cheek and some are me just being a _________. (you fill in the blank)

If you have any thoughts on any of these comments or questions, please let me know.  I am a curious person by nature and I need answers.

Thanks, Mitch

  1. Love Petan – hope he gets a chance

  2. I think that Thorburn will be a whipping boy as well.

Visors should be mandatory…I think of Marc Staal, TJ Galardi, Bryan Berard, and so on. http://www.aao.org/newsroom/re.....injury.cfm
Tough with fighting, I agree. I have no answer for that. I believe it will be banned someday…maybe.

The team needs new faces and more talent. That includes the fourth line. I like your assessment. 🙂

The Marc Staal injury was tough to watch for sure. I’ve been a little grouchy about 4th lines for quite some time and looking at the bottom end of the Jets roster just made it worse.

  3. My definition of ‘energy line’ means only playing four minutes a game, so they should have plenty of energy…..also a little nicer than saying ‘least talented’ line.

that’s my favorite definition to date Chris !!!!

Yeah I think “energy line” IS the gentle or perhaps politically correct term for least talented I hate politically correct but I’m good with gentle.
