Winnipeg Jets First Quarter Grades: Forwards

Winnipeg Jets grades for the forwards:

As usual in any hockey season, any given NHL roster is going to have its surprises and its disappointments.  The Winnipeg Jets are no exception.  The Winnipeg Jets forward group in the first quarter of the season has been very inconsistent with the exception of Kyle Connor and Pierre-Luc Dubois.

Evgeny Svechnikov has been up and down the lineup and has been pretty good in my opinion.  He is like found money.  Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler are clearly not themselves but I refuse to dump on them because they both had Covid 19 and the affects of the virus are still relatively unknow and especially on athletes.  Riley Nash has been a bust in my opinion.  He isn’t doing anything that David Gustafsson couldn’t do better and is the biggest fail so far this season.

Biggest surprise:  Pierre-Luc Dubois … Evgeny Svechnikov

Biggest disappointment:  Blake Wheeler … Riley Nash

Grading:  I assign two grades; first (hockey grade) is just strictly what you see is what you get and the second (ROI) is weighed against salary or “bang for your buck”.

At the time of this “Report Card” (after the Calgary Flames game), the Winnipeg Jets record was 10-7-4.

Give or take a + or – I feel these grades fairly reflect their play.

Please feel free to add your own grades or opinions on any player/players you feel I have over-rated or short-changed.  Message me in the COMMENTS section below.  Remember, this is only my opinion.

  1. Hi Mitch…I think the grade analysis is spot on, except I’d give Ehlers a B. While most of these forwards have played below potential, Ehlers can still execute a decent breakout creating chances for the offence. Dubois has been an excellent surprise based on his performance of last season, and well deserving of an A. Trying to grade a player on the intangibles, like the effects of Covid, are tough, but it doesn’t matter in the end result…if you don’t play up to potential, your grade will reflect that. This team has a whole lot of C’s on it..Yikes!

Hi Les, thanks for dropping by …. funny you mentioned Ehlers because he may be my fave … I struggled with his grade but I have doubt he’ll be higher come the mid-terms ….. lots of C’s is better than lots of D’s …. LOL …. DEFENCE ETC COME OUT TODAY.
