Brandon Wheat Kings This Week — Feb 17

Brandon Wheat Kings This Week — Feb 17 —

The Brandon Wheat Kings will be hoping that some good old fashioned home cooking is the right ingredient to get back on the winning track this week as they continue their Western Hockey League playoff stretch drive.

The Wheat Kings enter this week’s 3-game homestand having gone six games without a win.  During that time Brandon is 0-4-1-1 and are coming off Monday afternoon’s 4-0 whitewashing in Regina.

Daniel Wapple stopped 23 shots for the shutout in the Regina net while Dyson Stevenson had two goals and an assist to spark the Pats offensively.

“Our score today we reflective of our shots, how few we had, how few second shots we had, and I think it was also a reflection of how many quality scoring chances that we had,” Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon told Bruce Luebke on CKLQ’s post-game show, “I think it also really spoke to the ineffectiveness of our power-play.”

Brandon went 0-for-5 with the man advantage Monday afternoon, leaving the Wheat Kings 1-for-25 in the last six games – a stretch that has seen Brandon score just seven times overall.

The Wheat Kings enter the week with a record of 28-24-6-2 and sit in seventh place in the WHL’s Eastern Conference – four up on eighth place Red Deer and six ahead of the ninth place Prince Albert Raiders.

BRANDON BITS:

Defenceman Ryan Pulock has moved to within three goals of the franchise record for Most Career Goals by a blueliner, currently held by former all star Brad McCrimmon, who scored 61 goals during his three years in Brandon (‘1976-79) … During the club’s season high six game winless streak, the Wheat Kings have scored just seven goals … The Wheat Kings played Saturday’s game against Kootenay without five regulars in their lineup including the club’s leading goal scorer Richard Nejezchleb and the team’s leading scorer Jayce Hawryluk.  Nejezchleb did return on Sunday against Regina … Rookie netminder Jordan Papirny gave up four goals on Monday, which was rather odd for the 17-year old Edmonton product.  The former first round bantam draft choice has allowed three or fewer goals in thirteen of his last 15 starts and had a 2.24 goals against average, a .923 save pct. and a 7-2-2 record (since Christmas) entering Monday’s game in Regina … Brandon plays eight of their final 12 regular season games on home ice, including four in the month of March.
