Winnipeg Hockey Talk To Cover The University of Manitoba Bisons Men’s Hockey Team ….
Winnipeg Hockey Talk is pleased to announce we are adding the Manitoba Bisons Men’s Hockey Team to our list of teams we will be covering for hockey fans that visit our website. We would like to thank Chris Zuk, from the Manitoba Bisons Sports Information Department, for his cooperation in making this happen.
The Manitoba Bisons play in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS). The division or conference they play in is called the CWUAA which stands for Canada West Universities Athletic Association, aka Canada West or CanWest.
One of the things I like about the Bison hockey program is that it recruits and succeeds in having a lot of Winnipeg and Manitoba players on it’s roster.
Most of the Bison players start out playing their minor hockey in Winnipeg or Rural Manitoba where they move up through the ranks of their local association. After that, most players move on to play in the MJHL, SJHL AJHL, BCJHL or in the WHL in pursuit of their hockey dream.
After graduating from the junior ranks, players that don’t continue on to play pro or minor pro hockey may have accrued scholarship money from the WHL or may be recruited and offered an Athletic Scholarship to attend the University of Manitoba.
For those of you that don’t know much about CIS hockey, it is one of the hidden hockey gems in the city of Winnipeg and the province of Manitoba. The players come from the top junior leagues across the country and the hockey is competitive, exciting and played at a very high level.
The Bisons play out of the Max Bell Centre on the U of M campus. It seats approx 1400 for hockey and it is one of my favorite places to watch a hockey game. If you get a chance, go check out a U of M Bisons hockey game at Max Bell.
