Winnipeg Jets Training Camp Opens Today –
The Winnipeg Jets training camp opens today at the MTS Iceplex and will run there through Monday, Sept. 21. It will be then held at the MTS Centre for the remainder of the pre-season.
There should be some interesting competition in Winnipeg Jets camp this year and we need look no further than the goal crease with Connor Hellebuyck pushing for NHL playing time. The top two lines are pretty well etched in stone but the third and forth lines are wide open. Adam Lowry and Alex Burmistrov look to be safe but after that it’s anyone’s guess. Chris Thorburn and Anthony Peluso will probably be splitting time as the forth line right wingers so there is ample opportunity for youngsters like Andrew Copp, Nic Petan, Joel Armia, Brendan Lemieux, Scott Kosmachuk, Ryan Olsen, Jimmy Lodge, etc and everybody’s “odds-on-favourite” to make this years team, Nikolaj Ehlers.
The defence seems to be pretty well set, especially with the Winnipeg Jets having so many veteran defencemen under one-way contracts BUT that doesn’t mean they are safe! Players like Josh Morrissey and Jan Kostalek will be looking to make an impression.
Also … I know Winnipeg hockey fans get focused on the young prospects BUT don’t forget about veterans like Patrice Cormier, Austen Brassard, Julian Melchiori, Matt Halischuk, Brendan Kichton and others that will be fighting for a NHL paycheck. These players may not have all the hype of the youngsters but are far ahead of most young players in their development as professionals and that does carry some weight. Enjoy camp Jets fans.
