Random Thoughts From Motown Mitch: July 8

Mitch Kasprick is the “Motown Curmudgeon” aka “Motown Mitch”

Odds and Ends, Thoughts and Questions, from this past week in sports –

Just so there’s no confusion when I’m spewing my bias, I am a fan of the Winnipeg Jets, Arizona Coyotes, Manitoba Moose, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Winnipeg Goldeyes, Toronto Raptors, all curlers from Manitoba, and all Canadian athletes competing on the international stage.

I am NOT a fan of Gary Bettman or as I call him, Count Chocula.  I am a big believer in the 7Ps.  You’ve been warned.

Not much going on and not much to say this week.

1.  Jets:  We are eight days into free agency and so far the Jets have done very little but add fourth-line/AHL depth.

You can vote on more than one.

What do you expect from the Jets as "Free Agent Season" opens?

2.  Jets:  I think I liked it better when I didn’t know player salaries.  I have to admit that sometimes my dislike of a player is actually based on how much money he makes.

3.  Blue Bombers:  Winnipeg 29 at Ottawa 14  … The Blue Bombers improved their record to 3-0 after a solid team effort against the Redblacks on Thursday night.  Although the Bomber defence played very well, I thought the secondary still played too soft.  Andrew Harris had a nice rebound game after a so-so outing versus Edmonton.

The Good:

  • Matt Nichols until his head-shot … 16 out of  20 for 262 yards and one TD.
  • The defence was very solid.
  • A nice balanced attack from the offence.

The Bad:

  • Justin Medlock going 0-2.

The Ugly:

  • The decision by Matt Nichols not to slide after a nice 18-yard scamper and taking a headshot that cost him the rest of the game.

4.  NBA:  I wasn’t surprised  Kawhi Leonard chose to play at home and sign with the LA Clippers.  I was okay with this, how could you not be?  What I wasn’t okay with is Kawhi putting the Raptors on hold while he was trying to recruit and force a Paul George trade out of OKC to either Toronto or LA.  This is exactly why so many people don’t like the NBA, the players run the show.  Could you imagine this BS going on in the NHL?

5.  NHL:  So, where are all these offer sheets the ‘INSIDERS’ were talking about all season?

6.  Jets:  Jets fans puzzle me at times.  They gripe about the young players not playing or not getting an opportunity BUT piss and moan about not re-signing the players they would ultimately be replacing.

7.  Blue Jays:  If I was being completely honest I would say that it is a joke that Vladdy Jr. has been invited to compete in the home run hitting contest on Monday night.  As a fan, I can hardly wait.

UPDATE:

Vladdy didn’t win the home run contest but he certainly did steal the show.  After hitting 91 dingers he eventually ran out of steam in the finals.  He broke Josh Hamilton’s record of 28 home runs with 29 and he did it twice.  All in all it was quite a performance for the twenty-year-old.

8.  Blue Bombers:  I hope the Bombers don’t take the Argos lightly next week.  This is your prototypical trap game.  They have a great chance to go 4-0 if they come out focused and ready to play.

9.  Question for Chevy:  Are you finished shopping in the bargain bin and ready to get serious now?

10.  Important Dates:

July 12:  Winnipeg Blue Bombers host the Toronto Argonauts.
