Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind —
Some random facts and a few thoughts from this past week about the Winnipeg Jets, the Manitoba Moose and the National Hockey League.
1. The Winnipeg Jets let one slip away against St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night and went 1-1-0 last week. They are now 15-15-2 overall.
2. I absolutely love this time of the year with NHL hockey, the World Junior Hockey Championships, and the Spengler Cup all on TV. Oh ya!
3. With all due respect to Jets Captain Andrew Ladd, how many teams in the NHL would have him on their first unit powerplay?
4. Congrats to Chris Thorburn who on Friday versus the New York Rangers played in his 595th game with the Thrashers/Jets becoming the franchise’s all-time leader for games played.
5. Where have you heard this before? …. The Winnipeg Jets played very well 5 on 5 but give up two powerplay goals while their powerplay could barely generate a shot on goal and lose another close game. Rinse, wash and repeat.
6. A cynical person might ask why the Jets would pull their goaltender with two minutes left in the game when they can’t even get a shot on net during their PP. A cynical man might say if you don’t pull your goalie you actually would be in the game longer instead of fishing the puck out of you net. You know, if you were cynical.
7. I really like the Trouba/Byfuglien pairing but the third pairing with Chiarot and Stuart is tres scary!
8. Matt Halischuk might actually help the Jets PK. I know he couldn’t hurt it.
9. The Winnipeg Jets don’t have any prospects on Team Canada or Team USA for the upcoming WJHC but could potentially have three others in the tournament with Pavel Kraskovsky (Russia), Michael Spacek (Czech Rep), and Sami Niku (Finland) being invited to their country’s tryout camps.
10. PoMo sent a subtle message to the team about taking bad penalties when he dropped Andrew Ladd down to the third line on Friday night. It looks like the coach has reached his boiling point.
11. Do we see Hutch on Tuesday night versus the Flames or do you think it depends on how Connor Hellebuyck plays on Monday in Edmonton?
12. Adam Lowry is sent to the AHL’s Manitoba Moose for a little re-tooling and although I’m not completely surprised I was actually surprised a bit because he has not been the Jets worst player but because of his contract status he is one of the few on the team that they can use as an example.
13. All the Toby Enstrom and Tyler Myers haters have been pretty quiet lately. They have been pretty solid of late and they will need to keep it up with a bunch of road games on the horizon.
14. Congrats to Chase De Leo who recorded his first pro hat-trick the other night versus the Milwaukee Admirals in a 7-5 loss.
15. Matt Halischuk isn’t a big favourite of mine but I can see why Paul Maurice likes him. (see #8)
16. Check g5t.f17.myftpupload.com tomorrow for my article on Travis Hamonic.
17. It was nice to see Joel Armia get a little ice-time (10:54) versus the Rangers on Friday night. I thought he looked okay and I would like to see a little more of him.
18. Winnipeg Jets Special teams update:
PK: 27th at 76.8% down from 23rd at 78.5% last week … BRUTAL
PP: 29th at 14.7% down from 28th at 15.6% last week … EXTRA BRUTAL
19. Countdown to the 2016 World Cup: 272 days (Sept. 17-Oct. 1 in Toronto) How many Winnipeg Jets do you think will be playing in this event?
