Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind over the weekend —
Some random facts and a few thoughts from this past week about the Winnipeg Jets, the National Hockey League and the World Hockey Championships.
1. CANADA WINS GOLD at the 2015 IIHF World Hockey Championships!!!!
2. Congrats to Team USA on winning the Bronze Medal at the 2015 IIHF Men’s World Championships.
3. Winnipeg Jets prospect Connor Hellebuyck was named to the IIHF Media 1st All-Star Team.
4. Team Canada ended a five year medal drought at this years Worlds.
5. I would like to see the NHL implement a “crease rule” that is somewhere between the NHL’s version and the IIHF’s version BUT with an option for a video review or a challenge.
6. Does it get any better than Canada/Russia no matter what the score?
7. I would like to see the Winnipeg Jets start tapping into the KHL UFA pool. There are a lot of very good hockey players without NHL ties that could help a NHL team.
8. Congrats to the Kelowna Rockets on winning the WHL Championship in four straight games over the Brandon Wheat Kings.
9. The two Conference Finals are finally underway in the NHL. I don’t know what the hold-up was but I’m not impressed.
10. Congrats to Winnipeg Jets prospect Josh Morrissey and Winnipeg’s own Madison Bowey on winning the WHL Championship. (see#8)
11. Ondrej Pavelec was decent at the 2015 IIHF Men’s World Championships with a 5-3 record. He posted a 1.97 GAA and a SV% of .912 and one shutout.
12. Hearing “O Canada” being played at international sporting events never gets old. (see #1)
13. Congrats to “Hometown Boy” Cody Eakin on winning a Gold Medal at the World Championships. (see #1)
14. Congratulations to the Portage Terriers who won the RBC Cup emblematic of “Junior A” hockey supremacy in Canada.
15. Connor Hellebuyck had a big World Championships for Team USA in the Czech Republic. He led his team to a Bronze Medal posting a 7-2 record with a 1.37 GAA and a .948 SV% along with TWO goose-eggs. (see #4)
16. I like big-ice hockey. With today’s players being so big, there is a little more room and it can still be fast and hard-hitting.
17. I did not like the game winning goal by Dominic Moore in Game#1 of the Eastern Final. I don’t think a player should be allowed to skate through the goal crease and deflect a goal in like that especially when he was in the crease before the puck. The goal crease is for the goaltender and that’s that! (see #5)
18. Do you think it was a coincidence that Team Canada GM Jim Nill and Head Coach Todd McLellan had fifteen Western Conference players on their roster?
19. Congrats to the Brandon Wheat Kings on a terrific season. They should be contenders again to win the WHL Championship next season.
20. For the first time ever, Hockey Canada holds the World Junior Hockey Championship, the Senior Men’s World Hockey Championship and the Olympic Hockey Championship at the same time.
