Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: Oct. 10

Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind —

Some random facts and a few thoughts from this past week about the Winnipeg Jets, the Manitoba Moose, and the National Hockey League.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL JETS FANS!

UPDATE:

The Winnipeg Jets have re-assigned eight players to the Manitoba Moose:

Forwards:  Andrew Copp, Marko Dano, Chase De Leo, *Anthony Peluso and Nic Petan

Defencemen:  *Julian Melchiori and *Brian Strait

Goaltender:  *Ondrej Pavelec

*Pending waivers

The Jets still have 24 players in camp and need to be at 23 by 4pm tomorrow (Tuesday).

1. I realize that Paul Maurice was away coaching at the WCH but there was no reason to have as many players in training camp as they had.  They could have thinned the herd much earlier.

2.  I really wish everybody would stop blaming Jets management, Tyler Myers, Stacey Nattress, Jay Richardson, or the Jets stick boys for the Jacob Trouba trade request and holdout.  GET A GRIP!

3.  I think Josh Morrissey actually has earned a spot on the Jets opening game roster BUT I have a funny feeling he might be the exception.  I hope I’m wrong.

4.  I was NOT impressed with the amount of playing time Patrik Laine received in the pre-season.  I realize he has played a lot of hockey recently but he is still a rookie trying to get accustomed to the smaller NHL ice.  How much more of the JC Lipons, the Jimmy Lodges etc do we need to see?

5.  I don’t think any of the Winnipeg Jets goaltenders won the starting job based on their pre-season games and that is probably bad news for those that wanted to see a Hellebuyck/Hutchinson tandem.  It’s time to move on from Pav.

UPDATE:

There are rumours afloat that Ondrej Pavelec could be placed on waivers today!

6.  It didn’t matter how well Chase De Leo played in training camp he was a 100-1 shot to make the Jets opening night roster.

7.  We all know Chevy is the wizard of the waiver wire BUT it would be nice to see him use the waiver wire and try to get rid of some of the deadwood as well.

8.  I’m starting to wonder if the Jets have a problem getting rid of players that are under contract.  They do know they can trade, waive, or buyout players instead of waiting for their contracts to expire, right?  It’s getting reallllll tiresome.  Maybe they will prove me wrong when they post their 23-man roster today or tomorrow.

9.  I think Nikolaj “don’t call me Nik” Ehlers is going to have a monster season.

10.  Is Burmi safe?  How about Lowry?  Copp?  Has Armia done enough?  I know one guy that has played his ass off and will probably get sent down to Pascal’s Moose.  (see #18 for my answer)

11.  I really like Jacob Trouba but I’m already so sick and tired of the belly aching about his holdout.  I hope the Jets trade him so we can move on to how bad Chevy got ripped off or what a genius Chevy is.

12.  I think I would rather see Mathieu Perreault as a top six forward (maybe with Little and Laine) and Drew Stafford on the third line.

13.  I remember dumping all over the Brandon Tanev signing last spring, thinking it was a low-level, meaningless AHL depth signing but he has won my admiration and respect for his work ethic and compete level.  (see #18)

14.  I’m curious to see what the Jets brain trust does with Anthony Peluso and Chris Thorburn.  I know PoMo likes Thor so I could see him sticking on the 23-man roster.  I would be shocked if Peluso isn’t put on waivers (who would claim him) and he’s sent to the Moose.

15.  IMO, Marko Dano seems to be a very underrated player by the Winnipeg fan base.  I guess everybody is distracted by the new, shiny toys like Laine and Connor.

16.  Go Jays Go!

17.  I still think Kyle Connor would be better served to start this season in the AHL with Pascal’s Moose.

18.  In my opinion, Brandon Tanev has outworked almost every wannabee at this year’s Jets training camp and he probably gets sent to the Moose just because he can.  Sometimes pro hockey just isn’t fair.

19.  Is it just me or has Buff looked a little erratic during the pre-season?

20.  Winnipeg Jets 2016 countdown:

First regular season game:  4 days vs Carolina (Oct.13)

Countdown to the 2016 Tim Hortons Heritage Classic:  14 days (Oct. 23) in Winnipeg, MB.

Bye Pavs. Doubt anyone will claim him. Arrgh…I really worry about leaky Hutch. As goal-tending goes, so goes team success.

Good luck to all Jets’ fans. Hope it is a satisfying year of team development/progress.

When Pav clears waivers he’s still here and can be re-called at any time …. lots of motivation for Hutch and Helle
