Curtis Lazar played this past season in the WHL for the Edmonton Oil Kings. Curtis is a very good player that was projected to be a Top 10 pick in the the pre-season rankings. A slow start to the year saw his mid-season ranking come in around the 15-20 range.
Lazar is a goal scorer with an outstanding wrist shot with a pro-level release. He also has an excellent slap shot. He plays a rugged game and battles hard along the boards.
Lazar plays a good two way game and is more of a goal scorer than a play-maker even though he plays Center. As coaches like to say, he plays a north-south style game and isn’t afraid to stick his nose in the dirty areas to make a play. Lazar has potential to be a good #2 center, capable of playing big minutes and match-ups at the NHL level. Some scouts have compared him to a Ryan Kesler style of player.
Curtis Lazar is ranked in the 16-20 range but could go higher. He is one of the top prospects in the WHL. I don’t think he would be an too big of an “off the board” pick if he was selected by the Jets.
