Random Thoughts From Motown Mitch: July 29

Mitch Kasprick is the “Motown Curmudgeon” aka “Motown Mitch”

Odds and Ends, Thoughts and Questions, from this past week in sports –

Just so there’s no confusion when I’m spewing my bias, I am a fan of the Winnipeg Jets, Arizona Coyotes, Manitoba Moose, Winnipeg Ice, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Winnipeg Goldeyes, Toronto Raptors, all curlers from Manitoba, and all Canadian athletes competing on the international stage.

I am NOT a fan of Gary Bettman or as I call him, Count Chocula.  I am a big believer in the 7Ps.  You’ve been warned.

1.  Jets:  The Winnipeg Jets accepted the arbitrator’s ruling and have agreed to terms with forward Andrew Copp on a two-year contract with an average annual value of $2,280,000.  This was probably the most predictable result possible and makes you wonder how Kevin Cheveldayoff and Kurt Overhardt couldn’t reach this agreement?

2. Blue Bombers:  I can’t help but wonder how much the stadium location and/or lack of parking impacts the attendance in Winnipeg?

3.  Blue Bombers:  Winnipeg 15 vs Hamilton 23 … The Blue Bombers laid a giant egg in what was supposed to be the game of the week.  I don’t think any Bomber fan thought they were going to go 18-0 so I don’t think there is any reason to over-react but it was ugly.

The Good:

  • Not much good in this game.

The Bad:

  • Matt Nichols was terrible.
  • Paul Lapolice’s game plan and game-calling was equally terrible.  I will never understand why OCs go away from things that work.  There was not enough Andrew Harris or Lucky Whitehead for my liking.
  • Watching Jeremiah Masoli go down with a season-ending ACL injury was tough AND especially when there was absolutely no contact.  Good players being injured is just bad for the league.

The Ugly:

  • One word …. TURNOVERS.

4.  NHL:  I was a big Evander Kane fan when he played here in Winnipeg and I’m actually still a fan BUT this tweet from him this past week really pissed me off.

This is a complete BULLSHIT take by EK.  Trying to turn this into an NHL vs NBA or a black vs white thing is a joke.  Did Evander completely forget that the backlash he received was because his money-phone picture was posted during the NHL lockout and NHL fans were pissed at everybody.

I can’t help but wonder if EK just fired off this tweet to get a reaction and stir it up?  Well it worked with me LOL.

Kane’s money-phone picture was actually pretty funny but I can totally see why some hockey fans were butt-hurt.

5.  Jets:  July is basically over and there is still no news on a Kyle Connor or Patrik Laine signing.  None of the high profile RFAs have signed either and looks like everyone is waiting to see who blinks first.

6.  Blue Jays:  Even though the Jays are 27 games below .500 they are still an interesting and fun team to watch.  A perfect example was Saturday afternoon when they came back from an early 9-2 deficit to win 10-9 in extra innings and then puked up a 8-1 lead on Sunday and losing 10-9.

7.  CFL I wonder how the BC Lions feel about spending all that coin on Mike Reilly now?  It is nice to make a big free-agent signing but not having any money for a supporting cast just doesn’t make any sense.

8.   Jets:  It was nice to see Mick E Moose in Morris for the parade last weekend.  Yup, it was a slow week.  LOL

9.  Question for Chevy:  Have you talked to or thought about Jake Gardiner?

10.  Blue Jays:  Aaron Sanchez might not be broken anymore.  Nine up and nine down with 7 Ks was a nice start for him.  He was pretty good versus the Rays on Sunday and actually way better than his line of 4 ER in 5.2 innings.  He was dominant and almost unhittable through 5 innings.  Sanchez set a new club record by striking out the first six batters he faced.

11.  Blue Jays:  I’m not sure about Teoscar Hernandez again.  Is he turning the corner or teasing us?  He has been pretty good lately and looks like the player everyone was hoping he could be.

12.  Important Dates:

Aug. 1:  3 PM local time … MLB trade deadline, also known as the day when teams give all their good players to the Yankees, Red Sox and the Astros.

Aug. 1:  Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Toronto Argos.
