Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: Aug. 24

Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind over the weekend —

Some random facts and a few thoughts from this past week about the Winnipeg Jets, the Manitoba Moose and the National Hockey League.

1.  Today’s theme on my “Random Thoughts” is going to revolve around Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien since another week has come and gone and there is still no news regarding either of them from TNSE.

2.  I think the main reason Winnipeg Jets fans are obsessing about the status of Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien is that they were led to believe in this notion that they both can’t be extended.

3.  When, where, and who started the “Jets can’t afford both” dialogue?

4.  Remember during the first week of free agency when TSN’s Darren Dreger reported that contract talks with Andrew Ladd and the Winnipeg Jets had begun and the two parties were getting close to an agreement.  What happened?

5.  Darryl and I discuss the lack of news on Buff and Ladd plus where did the idea of not re-signing both come from.  Check it out here >>> WHT Podcast #42

6.  I wonder if the Winnipeg Jets brass sit up in their ivory towers laughing at us scurrying around down below looking for tidbits of information on what goes on under the “Cone of Silence” at TNSE?

7.  Do you believe in the old saying that “no news is good news“?

8.  Should Winnipeg Jets fans be concerned that the Jets have 10 defencemen on NHL contracts for the 2015-16 season and that’s not including Josh Morrissey?

9.  I have come to the conclusion that both Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien will be offered contract extensions and they will be Winnipeg Jets for at least FIVE more years.

Winnipeg Jets Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien

Who says the Winnipeg Jets can’t have both?

10.  Would it fair to say the amount of angst among Winnipeg Jets fans on the lack of news concerning Buff and Ladd is directly related to the “Frolik fiasco” of last off-season?  I think so!

11.  I really let loose on my dislike of the USHL getting too much hype in WHT Podcast #42 and it’s no secret that I am pro CHL and especially the WHL.  Make no bones about it hockey fans, the CHL is the top league in the world for providing hockey players to the NHL and always will be.

12.  Another reason I occasionally rail on the USHL is that I don’t think the CJHL and it’s member leagues that include the BCJHL, AJHL, SJHL, MJHL, SIJHL, NOJHL, OJHL, CCHL, QJHL, MHL get enough credit for the amount of players they send to play in the NCAA.  A lot of these players become their respective colleges top players and go on to have careers in pro hockey.

13.  If you had a choice and could sign only one, would you have signed Matt Halischuk or Lee Stempniak?

14.  Countdowns:

A.  2015 Young Stars Classic:  18 days (in Penticton, BC) >>> info and schedule

B.  Jets 1st pre-season game:  29 days (vs Minnesota)

C.  Jets 1st regular season game:  45 days (at Boston)

D.  2016 World Cup:  389 days (Sept. 17-Oct. 1 in Toronto)

15.  BTW … Christian Ehrhoff signed a 1-year deal with the L.A. Kings for $1,500,000.  No harm, no foul there.

16.  Winnipeg Hockey Talk is looking for Winnipeg Jets and Manitoba Moose writers AND we would love somebody to cover the Manitoba Bisons as well.  If you or somebody you know is interested, please contact us at:

  1. Re #13 I think I would have signed Stempniak ahead of Halischuk.

  2. I honestly think the Jets are trying to trade Buff. As you say in #8, we have many defencemen and I could see us dealing Dustin for a top 6 forward and a draft pick. A theory on why it’s taking so long I could maybe see them trying to do a sign and trade and if that’s the case I can see that taking a bit longer. As for Ladd, he’ll be signed before the season begins. He’s our captain and we’re not going to let him walk. Chevy showed us last season he’s a great GM and I have full confidence in him and the rest of the management team to get both of these guys signed/dealt.

maybe in your “Buff trade” scenario the team/teams that they are trying to trade him to might have salary cap issues … trades are tougher now-a-days.
