Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind over the weekend —
Some random facts and a few thoughts from this past week about the Winnipeg Jets, the Manitoba Moose and the National Hockey League.
1. Overheard at the offices of TNSE
2. I realize that this is a hockey website but I need to ask “what the hell is wrong with Lirim Hajrullahu?”
3. It still really bugs the hell out of me that the Oilers won the draft lottery. I must still have some lingering hatred left over from the Glen Sather era.
4. I can’t help it but I really want to rag on Nik over his Nikolaj request. Maybe he should actually make it to “the show” before he gets all uppity! But I jest. I’m really pulling for him to make it this season and I was thrilled when they drafted him.
5. It’s been a couple of weeks since Michael Frolik signed with the Calgary Flames and the sun still continues to rise in Winnipeg so I guess we’re going to be alright.
6. Ryan Kesler has a lot of miles on him and I’m not sure I would have offered him a 6-year extension but the Ducks have him wrapped up until he’s 37 years old! Goods luck with that.
7. Johnny Oduya signs with Dallas for 2 years. Not bad but I’d rather have Trevor Daley although the Stars got Patrick Sharp out of that deal.
8. Is it too early to start a “Buff watch”? The Jets can’t go into next season without addressing his contract situation can they?
9. First bobsledding now hockey in Jamaica!
10. Winnipeg Hockey Talk is looking for Winnipeg Jets and Manitoba Moose writers AND we would love somebody to cover the Manitoba Bisons as well. If you or somebody you know is interested, please contact us at:
If you have any thoughts on any of these comments or questions, please let me know. I would love to hear your opinions.

I’m not sure if it’s what you implied, but shouldn’t #8 actually read the “Buff trade watch”?
It would be interesting in seeing how many of your followers actually think Buff will be in the Peg after the coming season.
you could be right … it might be the Buff trade watch. Whether it’s trade or sign it needs to be addressed before training camp. The longer it goes the more likely it is he’s getting extended IMO.
Re: Number 3…let’s reward an organization for being fully, completely (Hip reference), utterly incompetent. That makes sense! Remind me, how many 1st round picks is that in how many years? I hated Sather, and everyone on the team in the 80’s.
Speaking of hate, let’s talk about Number 6 – Ryan Kesler (sorry, there is only one “s” in Kesler). Because of the spelling discrepancy, could we just call him Cryan Kes-knob? He’s a great player, I cannot deny that, but he is a much greater knob. Got my figurative fill of that guy during my days living in Vancouver while the Jets 1.0 had been catapulted to Phoenix.
Number 7: I agree. Trevor Daley had 16 goals this past year. I thought Johnny Oduya was going to become a 2-dimensional player in the playoffs. I mean 2-dimensional literally as we was getting flattened into the boards on every aggressive forecheck. (More puns cometh) When they said that Chicago lacked depth on D, it was because his body got ‘scrunched’ to about 1cm depth. And, Patrick Sharp is 35 and also with a lot of miles, especially with all the games played in the last 6 years. I think the Hawks did very, very, very well with those deals. Plus, Garbutt is a Wpg boy.
Number 8: It’s never early to start a Buff watch. Well, weight watch, or watch out if you’re on the lake. Disappointed in Buff’s late season esca-icecapades. (Hope I’m not out of line with this one). Anyone been a fly on Chevy’s wall?
You get an extra 2 points for the Hip reference … well done!
My bad. Sharp is 33.
Number 6 agree! I was surprised by Murray signing him for the length he did.
Number 7: Agree I would rather have Daley.
Number 8: To me it gets complicated for Chevy. He has 12.5 million in Cap space with Ladd, Buff, Scheifele, Lowry, Trouba, and Hutchinson’s contracts expiring after this season.
don’t forget to factor in the Jets “internal cap”.
Your #5 pt (Frolik) kind of rubbed me the wrong way. It seems like a cheap-shot considering that no games are being played. If the Flames manage to take the next developmental step before the Jets do, I would expect there to be a lot more fan criticism about Frolik non-move by Chevy. Frankly, Chevy is going to feel the heat IF young Flames, Oilers, Avs, or Stars get their operations in a higher gear before the Jets do this year. (For all the good vibrations from having playoff games at MTS Centre, it seems Jets fans are conveniently forgetting that Jets didn’t even finish in Central Division top 4 last year.)
I like/liked Frolik but my point was the Jets fan-base was so upset over something that they couldn’t control and we’ll never know why Frolik wouldn’t re-sign so why get upset over it.
