Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind over the weekend —
Some random facts and a few thoughts from this past week about the Winnipeg Jets, the Manitoba Moose and the National Hockey League.
1. If the Chicago Blackhawks clinch their 3rd Stanley Cup in six years on Monday or Wednesday night this week would that make them a “Dynasty”?
2. Trade deadline acquisitions like Antoine Vermette rarely get comfortable with their new teams until the following season. In his case he becomes a UFA on July 1 but at least he scored a couple huge goals in the Stanley Cup Final.
3. Congrats to Portland WinterHawks forward Chase De Leo for signing his ELC with the Winnipeg Jets last week.
4. Is there a NHL team that would be willing to pay Mike Green of the Washington Capitals anything close to the 6.08 mil he made last season? yuck!
5. Will somebody over at True North please lift the “cone of silence” from the offices over at the MTS Center. I can’t hear what’s going on! (Definition below at #11).
6. I wrote this piece on our sister website, Arizona Hockey Talk about the latest in Glendale, the lease agreement, Coyotes shemozzle >>> How Much More Must An Arizona Coyotes Fan Endure? Thanks for letting me vent.
7. 2015 NHL Entry Draft countdown: 12 days.
8. I think the Jets are going to get two good players at picks #17 and #25 but lots of fans a clamoring for Chevy to make a deal to move up in the draft.
9. Will Andrew Ladd and/or Dustin Byfuglien be Winnipeg Jets on June 27? I say both. No trades at the draft.
10. It looks like ex-Jet prospect Carl Klingberg is ready to sign in the KHL. The Winnipeg Jets traded the upcoming RFA for upcoming UFA Lee Stempniak at the trade deadline this past March.
11. Cone of silence definition: From a running gag on the TV show “Get Smart” in which a plexiglass device would lower from the ceiling and cover the heads of two speakers, so that their conversation couldn’t be spied upon or an imaginary zone from which sound or discussion can’t escape. The cone of silence is used to keep something quiet or private. Most often applied to spoken communication. (see #5)
12. How many games do you think Chase De Leo will play in the NHL in his career? Less than 50 … 50-100 … more than 100. (see #3)
13. Free Agent Frenzy countdown: 17 days
14. I don’t know where he would fit in with the Winnipeg Jets but I like 29-year-old UFA Carl Soderberg. In 2014-15 his cap hit was $1 million.
15. I’m pulling for the Lightning tonight because I want to see a game seven. IMO, there is nothing better than a Stanley Cup Final game seven.
16. I wouldn’t mind if Chevy used one or both of the Jets first round picks if it got us into the “Top 5” but I think that would be a long-shot. (see #9)
17. I wonder if the Jets have any interest in Ryan O’Reilly?
18. Will Corey Crawford get his due respect if he wins another Stanley Cup?
19. “You don’t know what you’ve got till it gone” is how Winnipeg Jets might feel if Andrew Ladd isn’t resigned.
20. Winnipeg Hockey Talk is looking for Winnipeg Jets and Manitoba Moose writers AND we would love somebody to cover the Manitoba Bisons as well. If you or somebody you know is interested, please contact us at:

Just wanted to comment on RT#1…
IMO, YES!
This reason is for what you mentioned: 3 in 6, but I would like to add that they were one (measly) goal away from a Cup last year losing at home to LA, the eventual Cup winners, in Game 7 in overtime in the Conference Final. (Side note: remember Carter’s controversial “off-side” goal.)
Of course, though they still would have had to play the games, does anyone think the NYR would have beaten Chicago? LA didn’t have much trouble, so, not many, if any.
Woulda, coulda, shoulda been 4 in 6.
Once again, “Yes” to dynasty, and once again, IMO.
I can’t strongly disagree with you but I’d like to see a B2B in there … and they haven’t won this one yet … still scoreless as of this post.
Indeed, but that loss to LA ruined the B2B, which I intended on writing, but forgot to add, and now would have been a B2B2B (i.e. I somewhat agree with you on the B2B facet).
Anyway, you brought up a good talking point.
And, trade Byfuglien for the good of the franchise for the mid and long-term. One really has to worry if he boats and bloats with another $60+M (7 year contract). Good grief, he was so selfish and so awful at the end of last year thinking (I think he was thinking) he was the team and could do no wrong. IMO.
I agree on Buff … I don’t fall in love with players anymore … the labor battles have made me very jaded … they are commodities to me, I like them while they play here but if I can turn them into something better that’s all I care about … the name on the front of the jersey not the back! Pretty cynical isn’t it? Don’t get me wrong, I have my favorite players but once they’re gone, they’re gone, I move on just like they do.
Hi Mitch. I agree with your cone of silence comment but that is how it has been for years now. The Jet’s brass keep everything close to the vest. The only tidbit I have heard is Chevy is trying to sign Stafford.
I agree Carl Soderberg would be a nice addition! If Chevy got a top 5 draft pick who would you like to see drafted?
I would like to see Toby Enstrom moved but I think the Jets still value him. I like his skill but his size goes against him and we have an overabundance of defensemen who can play the offensive game effectively.
Chevy can surprise but I don’t see much change in the Ladd, Byfuglien, Enstrom, or moving draft picks department.
It might all hinge on how many of his own UFAs he signs before the draft.
Doesn’t Enstrom have an NMC?
This stmt. is made with the consideration that it would likely reduce his trade value. Or, at least, that is the conventional thinking.
And, Jets fans better hope Trouba can shake the 2nd half of the season sophomore jinx. He was ‘gawdawful’ on many nights. To me, it looked like he wasn’t respecting the opposition and it was costing him: a lot of turnovers in his own zone with no one behind him.
So, depth on D would allow some nights in the pressbox for anyone not pulling their weight.
Finally, hopefully, UFA’s will be more willing to come to the Peg in the next couple of years given the much reported ‘in the system’.
IMO.
Final thought: Isn’t it time for some Keith-Neidermayer comparisons?
