Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: June 18

Odds and Ends on the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL –

Some random facts and a few thoughts about the Winnipeg Jets, the Manitoba Moose, and the National Hockey League.

1.  Hockey season is over and now we’re waiting for the draft and the opening of free agency.  I’ve been toying with the idea of branching out a bit and talking about other sports.  Winnipeg Hockey Talk could become Winnipeg Sports Talk.  I’m not sure whether this is a good idea or not.  The Winnipeg Jets would always be the major interest of this website but sometimes there isn’t enough hockey news and my thoughts wander to other sports.

2. It was a slow week in the NHL but there was one trade of note.  Les Habitants traded Alex Galchenyuk to Arizona for Max Domi and as a Coyotes supporter, I really liked this deal.  I’ve always liked Max Domi but I have a feeling Galchenyuk is going to break out in Arizona.

3.  I’m looking for some feedback and I would appreciate any and all input into this thought.  You can vote as many times as you want and pick more than one answer.

Should the curmudgeon branch out and share his thoughts on other sports?

4. Pet Peeve 1:  Teams that pass out their “championship” caps for players to wear before the players shake hands.  I think this is EXTREMELY CLASSLESS.

My thoughts on the proper way to celebrate.

  • Go mob your goalie and jump around.
  • Congratulate each other for an acceptable amount of time BUT don’t make the losing team stand around at center ice forever waiting to shake hands.
  • Don’t wear your f’n championship ball caps in the handshake line.  This is complete HORSESHIT.
  • After shaking hands go celebrate your ass off with your teammates and families.

Two of the above happened in both the NHL and AHL final games and I thought it was brutal and unacceptable.

5.  If I was going to do a “Random Thought” on another sport, I would wonder why the USGA feels the need to make the golf courses in their rotation borderline unplayable?  I don’t want to see guys shooting 20 under par in the majors either but I also don’t want to see a championship where not a SINGLE GOLFER is under par after four rounds.  I think maybe the mucky mucks at the USGA are a little too full of themselves.

6.  Pet Peeve 2:  We are getting closer to the NHL Entry Draft and ONCE AGAIN I’m hearing the word “generational” being used way too loosely.  Give it a rest already.  The player closest to this narrative in current times is Connor McDavid and he isn’t generational yet.  Not even close.  He has the best chance but he has a long way to go.

7.  I think the Arizona Coyotes are off their rocker giving OEL 8 mil for 8 years.

8.  I really didn’t think this was going to happen but it looks like Ilya Kovalchuk is going to get overpaid and probably get too much term.

9.  Pet Peeve 3:  The word “adversity” gets tossed around pretty loosely nowadays as well.  Adversity is NOT being down a goal in a hockey game.

10.  Key dates:

  • NHL Entry Draft:  June 22–23 – The 2018 NHL Entry Draft will be held at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
  • UFA Interview Period:  June 24 – Unrestricted free agents may meet and interview with potential new teams from the day after the NHL Entry Draft (but not later than June 25) until June 30.
  • The Free Agency Period:  July 1 – Free agency begins on the first day of July.  UFA players are free to negotiate and sign a contract with any NHL team.

  1. I say expand your horizons, Mitch.
After the awards, the draft and free agency, you’ve got basically two months of dead air, so why not get into the Bombers, baseball, soccer, golf, tennis, whatever rots your socks or turns your crank.
Ya, you’d have to rename the blog, but so what?
Trust me, the main thrust will always be toward the Jets, because that’s the talker in Pegtown. I long ago discovered that with my blog. But there’s considerable interest in the Bombers and CFL, too.
Anyway, I say go for it. Call it The Curmudgeon’s View from Portage and Main. Or Curmudgeon’s Corner. Or What the Forks Up, Winnipeg? Or Pegtown Peeves with the Curmudgeon.
Just remember, The River City Renegade is already taken.

thanks for checking in PDS … awesome advice … I am going to give this some serious thought … I’m not sure I want to go through the process of changing the website name BUT I could change the sub-heading description … maybe I’ll try the next few Mondays and see how it goes … THANKS again

BTW … you know I love your blog

        Thanks, Mitch.
I’m not sure how much of a process a name change would be for you, but on word press it’s quite simple.
Meanwhile, I wouldn’t be shy about changing the website the masthead either, just to give it a fresh feel and look. Use some art in it. I’ve done this a few times over the years with my blog. Again, it’s a simple process on word press.
Whatever you choose to do, I’ll be reading.

Thanks …. yes, I can change the name but I think the domain name would be the same … I think I need to talk to my web host.
