Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: Oct. 6

Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind over the weekend —

These were some of the things that rattled through my head this past week about the NHL and our Winnipeg Jets.

1.  Remember the Winnipeg Jets first pre-season when everybody was drooling over Paul Postma?

2.  Was the selection of the Winnipeg Jets 2014-15 roster based on money or merit?

3.  I hate to fast forward through the 2014-15 season but I’m really excited to see next years training camp.  I see a major transformation.

4.  I think picking up Peter Budaj was a smart move.  Competition in the crease isn’t a bad thing, is it?

5.  A couple of weeks ago I stated how much I hate the trapezoid.  So the NHL went and made it even bigger just to mess with me.  Damn you Bettman!

6.  Who is your choice for Jets 4th line?  Peluso-Slater-Thorburn or Galiardi-Slater-Halischuk?  Or another combo?

7.  I must admit I was a little disappointed by the Jets final seven re-assignments.  I wanted to see a little more of Nic Petan.

8.  Did anybody else find it strange that one of the Jets prized prospects, Connor Hellebuyck didn’t see one minute of game time in the pre-season?

9.  Who is your choice for the second defence pairing?  Clitsome-Trouba or Stuart-Trouba?

10.  Should Jets fans be concerned about the amount of penalties the team has taken during the pre-season?

Now some of these questions are serious, some are just tongue in cheek and some are me just being a _________. (you fill in the blank)

If you have any thoughts on any of these comments or questions please let me know.  I am a curious person by nature and I need answers.

Thanks, Mitch

    1) I still like Postma alot. When injuries and coaching decisions allow him on the ice he’s very effective. Plus, he’s only 25 with his prime still coming up.

    4) Budaj vs Pavelec = Old Pav vs Young Pav. A heated competition for sure. (If you assume Budaj was claimed because Jets are assuming Hutch will flop.)

    10) Yup. I’m sick of hearing about stupid penalties over the past few years. Time to smarten up and pick their spots.

Postma has been very unlucky …… I would like to see him play in 40 straight games.

4th line to start should be Slater-Galiardi-Halischuk because I thought they had a good preseason and deserve the shot. I’ve always liked Peluso and I think people got down on Thorburn last year when he moved into the third line but he was forced into that job because of injuries. He’s a good 4th line guy, tough and good along the boards. Injuries will happen so they’ll all be playing eventually.

Don’t get me started on penalties! I thought there were some very questionable calls this preseason but I may be biased! I only get angry at officiating when they call a penalty then the exact same infraction is committed later and they don’t call it, that burns me up. But I thought the Jets penalty killing was fantastic so maybe it won’t matter too much anyway.

    The trapezoid is stupid.

I have to admit, I want the 2014-2015 season to start just from the up and coming talent but I still believe the Jets will be even closer to playoffs this year. Colorado went 0 for 7 in preseason (not sure if they played another game or not) did they surprise teams last year maybe? Or does that mean nothing?
