Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: Dec. 22

Things about the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL that crossed my mind over the weekend —

Some things that crossed my mind this past week about the Winnipeg Jets and the National Hockey League.

1.  The Winnipeg Jets played 3 games this week going 2-0-1 … 5 of 6 points.  Thoughts?

2.  Toby, Bogo, Jacob AND now Stu out for an extended period of time.  I have never seen a NHL team have their top 2 pairings on the IR at the same time.

3.  The Winnipeg Jets and the St. John’s IceCaps have 7 regular defencemen out of the line-up.

4.  Coming out of the Winnipeg Jets training camp, Buff and Ben weren’t even on the radar as a defence pairing and now they are our top pairing and playing fairly well.

5.  So much for Dallas Eakin’s vote of confidence from Oilers G.M. Craig MacTavish at last week’s “State of the Union” presser (or as I called it … the “Throw everybody in the organisation under the bus” presser).

6.  Mark Scheifele is starting to warm up a bit and it’s about time.

7.   Welcome to Winnipeg Jay Harrison.  (see #2)

8.  The book is closed on the Jets 2014 7th round draft pick.  The Jets traded their 2014 7th round pick to the Ottawa Senators (who selected defenceman Kelley Summers) for Ottawa’s 2015 6th round selection who they have now flipped to the Carolina Hurricanes for defenceman Jay Harrison.

9.  The Mathieu Perreault/Michael Frolik/Mark Scheifele line is starting to develop some nice chemistry.  (see#6).

10.  The Jets PP is also starting to show some signs of life when they get a PP!

11.  Even though the Jets took 5 of 6 points last week, the way we left that 6th point on the table leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

12.  It’s official … we have a full-blown goaltending controversy.

13.  Sometimes you need a big save but sometimes you just need that next goal too!

14.  How huge are this weekends “home and home” games with Minny going to be?

15.  Good luck to Jets prospects, Eric Comrie, Nic Petan and Josh Morrissey in their quest for a Gold Medal at the 2014/15 WJHC and also to Nik Ehlers (Denmark), Jan Kostalek (Czech Republic), potentially Pavel Kraskovsky (Russia) and potentially Chase De Leo (U.S.A.).

16.  I would like to wish all of our readers at Winnipeg Hockey Talk a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

I agree with you about the Scheifele line. As soon as I saw that proposed line I liked it. Needs a trigger man and Scheif is the one to benefit from it.

yup … you can juggle lines in camp and even pre-season games but nothing beats the real test of regular season games … I’m glad they found each other … injuries and/or suspensions often create opportunities.

Hi Mitch. I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year as well. I enjoy your thoughts and comments! I must admit I have been impatient with Chevaldayoff in the past but I now have to say I can see his logic. Letting Jokinen go and signing Perreault is looking brilliant. Signing Paul Maurice was an important move. All that NHL experience was too hard to pass up. Getting Jay Harrison for a sixth round pick was very, very good in my opinion. Another guy with a lot of NHL experience. This team is going in the right direction and is young with developing prospects in the mix. Exciting times for Winnipeg hockey fans.
