Four segments of 13 points will get the Winnipeg Jets to 95 points –
I’ve already conceded that the Winnipeg Jets will not make the playoffs but for you optimistic fans out there that still have hope here is what needs to happen.
Most number crunchers seem to think the Jets will need 95-97 points to snag the last Western Conference wildcard spot but it is only gone higher than 95 once so for argument’s sake let’s settle on 95 points for the second wildcard spot.
The Winnipeg Jets finished their first half of the schedule with an 18-17-7 record for a very underwhelming 43 points and 6th place in the Central Division, so basically, the Jets need 52 points in their final 40 games to reach my magic number of 95. This would be a tall order for a very good team and I’m not sure we are that team as of right now but you asked me to play along so I will.
The last 6 years for the final wildcard position –
- 2018-19 – 90 points.
- 2017-18 – 95 points
- 2016 -17 – 94 points
- 2015-16 – 87 points
- 2014 -15 – 99 points
- 2013-14 – 91 points
Every NHL team splits their games into segments with certain goals. Some teams go with 5-game segments but most go with 8 or 10-game segments. I’ll guarantee you Dave Lowry/Kevin Cheveldayoff/Mark Chipman have a similar chart on their desks and I won’t be surprised if they are looking for 13 points on average in their final 4 segments.
Ideally, it would be nice to get off to a great start, get on a winning run, and bank a few extra points but the Winnipeg Jets schedule is a beast having to play a game every other night including a bunch of back-to-backs. The back-to-backs aren’t too bad if both teams are on back-to-backs but the bottom line is it is going to be a meatgrinder and the team can’t have any passengers. How are you feeling now? Are you still with me?
Okay, for those of you that have stuck around there is a little bit of good news. In the Jets’ final 40 games they play 22 at home and 18 on the road.
So there you have it, the good guys need 13 points every 10 games. I think we are closer to Shane Wright than a playoff spot and don’t get me wrong, although I think we have no hope in hell of seeing a Whiteout it doesn’t mean I won’t be pulling for one. I’d love to be writing an apology after segment 4 to all of those who believed. I’m pulling for you too.

Hence the reason we should be sellers at the deadline and playing our youth from here on in. 91, 14, 54(when ready), 71, 81, 80, 27, 19 (when ready), 65 87. Let them learn on the job. All of them have the skill to be regular NHL players .
agreed … and I would like to see a whole new coaching staff
