Main Camp Underway

Veterans  Hit The Ice For Main Camp ….

Brandon Wheat Kings 2013 Main Camp is underway at Westman Communications Group.

Following some practice time, the first of two scrimmages scheduled for the day was played Friday morning with Team Black scoring a dramatic 7-6 overtime victory over the Gold squad.

Captain Ryan Pulock, New York Islanders’ first round draft choice in June, scored the game winner at the 1:20 mark.

A first round bantam draft choice of the Wheat Kings in 2012, Calgary product Braylon Shmyr sent the game into overtime when he tied the game at six with just over two minutes remaining in regulation time. Shmyr ended the game with a goal and four points while center Tim McGauley had three goals and four points in a losing cause for Team Gold.

Leading the way for the Blacks was 17-year old local product Brett Kitt, who scored three times for the winners.

Taylor Sanheim, Latvian left-winger Rihard Bukharts and Jayce Hawryluk also scored for the Black Team while Liam Gregor and Nolan Patrick rounded out the scoring for Team Gold.

Kitt_MainCamp3Friday’s game also featured the first tilt of Camp as veterans John Quenneville battled Hawryluk in the final minutes of the third period.

Main Camp comes on the heels of a successful 2-day Rookie Camp that featured over fifty Wheat Kings’ prospects. In Thursday night’s Annual Rookie Intrasquad Game, Kitt scored the overtime winner as Team White knocked off Team Black 6-5.

The second scrimmage game of the day will be played tonight at 6:30, with Saturday games scheduled for 9:30am and 6pm.

Today marks the Camp debut for veteran defenceman Taylor Green, rookie goalkeeper Jordan Papirny and Bukharts. While Bukharts was the Wheat Kings first round selection (7th overall) in this summer’s Canadian Hockey League Import Draft, Green was obtained earlier this month from the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Papirny meanwhile has been in Brandon all week but did not participate in the Rookie on ice sessions.

The Wheat Kings begin Main Camp with a total of seventeen WHL veterans including goalkeeper Curtis Honey, who assumes the club’s number one job with last spring’s deal that saw 20-year old Corbin Boes sent to Lethbridge.

The other veterans include defencemen Kord Pankewicz, Rene Hunter, Colton Waltz, Nick Walters, Eric Roy and Pulock.

The returning forwards are Quintin Lisoway, Taylor Cooper, Richard Nejezchleb, Chad Robinson, Jack Palmer, Jens Meilleur, McGauley, Quenneville and Hawryluk.
