Two Wheat Kings Ranked By Central Scouting

Two Brandon Wheat Kings on the NHL Radar for 2015 —

A pair of Brandon Wheat Kings have already grabbed the attention of Central Scouting for the 2015 National Hockey League Draft.

Defenceman Ryan Pilon and left-winger Jesse Gabrielle are among the nineteen Western Hockey League players to make Central Scouting’s Futures North American list of top prospects.  A former first round bantam draft choice of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, the 6’2″ 212 lb Pilon was acquired by the Brandon Wheat Kings in November 2013 in exchange for veterans Taylor Cooper and Nick Walters as well as prospect Tanner Browne.

In 66 games last season, the Duck Lake, Saskatchewan product had seven goals and 36 points.  Gabrielle meanwhile was Brandon’s fifth round selection (100th overall) in the 2012 bantam draft and before becoming a Wheat King this past season, he played High School hockey in Minnesota.  The 17-year old 5’11” 201 lb Moosomin, Saskatchewan native had twelve goals and 26 points in 49 games this past season.

Also on the Futures List this week is Russian defenceman Ivan Provorov, who was the Brandon Wheat Kings’ first round pick in last week’s Canadian Hockey League Import Draft.  As a rookie member of the Cedar Rapids Roughriders of the USHL in 2013-14, the 6′ 193 lb native of Yaroslavl scored six goals and 19 points in 56 games. Provorov joins Czech overage forward Richard Nejezchleb and 19-year old Latvian winter Rihards Bukarts as imports on the Wheat Kings’ protected list.

All CHL clubs are permitted to carry two Europeans but because Nejezchleb was chosen by the New York Rangers in last month’s NHL Draft and is eligible to play professionally this winter, Brandon was allowed to select a player in this year’s import draft.
