Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: July 18

Odds and Ends, Thoughts and Questions, from this past week in hockey –

Just so there’s no confusion when I’m spewing my bias, I am a fan of the Winnipeg Jets, Arizona Coyotes, Manitoba Moose, Winnipeg Ice, and all Team Canada Hockey teams.

I am NOT a fan of Gary Bettman or as I call him, Count Chocula.  I am a big believer in the 7Ps. You’ve been warned.

1. Jets:  A lot of Jets fans are asking how the Jets let RFA, Eric Comrie slip away and turn into a UFA?  Was it an oversight or an organisational decision not to tender a QO to Comrie?  Comrie had played in enough games to still be considered an RFA but he was 90 minutes short in those games to retain his RFA status.  Somebody over at TNSE has some “splaining to do”.  The winner in all this was Eric Comrie who earned himself a tidy little raise and a chance to be the #1 tender in Buffalo.  Two years at $1,800,000 per season is a helluva lot more than he was going to get in Winnipeg.  Good for him.      [Read more…]

1. Jets:  Without getting into any in-depth analysis of the Jets’ performance at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft last week, I will say that overall I was pleased with their picks.  The truth of the matter is NOBODY really knows for sure and it will be 2-4 years before we can make a decent evaluation, so until then I won’t bore you with my predictions.  There are predictions and analyses from smarter people than I all over the place and by now I think you’ve probably seen quite a few.  One of our writers (Riley Malinowski), will be posting his thoughts soon.

1. Jets:  Well the speculation is over, the Winnipeg Jets have finally hired their head coach but I’m not sure many thought it would be Rick Bowness.  Yes, Rick Bowness, Jets 1.0 Rick Bowness.  I definitely didn’t see this one coming but after a little bit of reflection it makes sense and especially if you believe that Barry Trotz is still in the mix in the future.

1. Jets:  I’m feeling lazy this week so I’m borrowing a lot of my thoughts from Twitter.

1. Jets:  The Winnipeg Jets played three games this past week going 1-1-1 giving them a record of 34-28-11.  They are 7 points behind Dallas and 8 points behind Nashville and even if they run the table they probably still won’t make it as it looks like that playoff line will be higher than 97 points.

It usually takes somewhere around 92-95 points for a playoff spot but the Arizona Coyotes padded a lot of Western Conference teams’ records.
