Random Thoughts On The Winnipeg Jets: July 25

Mitch Kasprick is now the “Westdale curmudgeon”

Odds and Ends, Thoughts and Questions, from this past week in hockey –

Just so there’s no confusion when I’m spewing my bias, I am a fan of the Winnipeg Jets, Arizona Coyotes, Manitoba Moose, Winnipeg Ice, and all Team Canada Hockey teams.

I am NOT a fan of Gary Bettman or as I call him, Count Chocula.  I am a big believer in the 7Ps. You’ve been warned.

1. Jets:  The Pierre-Luc Dubois drama is settled for the time being as he accepted the Jets qualifying offer of $6,000,000 although it still doesn’t settle the big picture.  It will be very interesting and probably be very frustrating watching this play out.      [Read more…]

1. Jets:  Without getting into any in-depth analysis of the Jets’ performance at the 2022 NHL Entry Draft last week, I will say that overall I was pleased with their picks.  The truth of the matter is NOBODY really knows for sure and it will be 2-4 years before we can make a decent evaluation, so until then I won’t bore you with my predictions.  There are predictions and analyses from smarter people than I all over the place and by now I think you’ve probably seen quite a few.  One of our writers (Riley Malinowski), will be posting his thoughts soon.

1. Jets:  The Winnipeg Jets played three games this past week going 1-2-0 giving them a record of 36-32-11 on the season and now return home for their final 4 games of the season.

UPDATE:

Winnipeg Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey has been named the team’s nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.  The Masterton Trophy is awarded annually by the National Hockey League to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

The trophy is named in honour of the late Bill Masterton (born in Winnipeg), a Minnesota North Stars player who died on January 15, 1968, after sustaining an injury during a hockey game.

1. Jets:  The Winnipeg Jets played three games this past week going 1-1-1 giving them a record of 34-28-11.  They are 7 points behind Dallas and 8 points behind Nashville and even if they run the table they probably still won’t make it as it looks like that playoff line will be higher than 97 points.

It usually takes somewhere around 92-95 points for a playoff spot but the Arizona Coyotes padded a lot of Western Conference teams’ records.

NHL Odds – Winnipeg Jets

Winnipeg Jets playoff odds

Let’s face it, sitting on 68 points from 63 games at the time of writing isn’t really where the Jets will want to see themselves. In terms of where their season is going to end, it isn’t really looking too great. Will they make the playoffs? Short of a big push towards the closing stages of the season, it’s looking unlikely. They’re not so far down that they have a great chance at winning the draft lottery, so where does that leave them?
